Hey folks...

I am a newbie and m now installing gentoo for a week beacuse i got a Dell inspirion 3500 with no network card and that is a piece of work.

So, reading thru all this forum posts, i still did not manage to get the wireless card running.

I am running the actuall GENTOO 2005.1 (kernel 12) on a dell inspirion 3500
The WLan card is NETGEAR WG511 v2 Made in china

I installed the prism54 firmware - nothing happens
I recompiled the cernel - pcmcia mngr works - no card detected
I installed the script for W net - eth0 not found

Installing linux without NETWORK is not as easy as it seems

Please help

Not suprising - prism54 on linux only supports v1 cards ....
You may get it to work with ndiswrapper + windows drivers

hmmmmmm

Is there no posible way to install them without net....

The LAPTOP has no NETWORK CARD - the only one is the NETGEAR which we try to get running....

Please help

ALSO... lsmod shows a lot of modules and next to them (used) it prints out - . Is this ok or should it be different

Thx

You could always download the required stuff and burn it to a CD or something.

That's perfectly ok - it shows you've configured for modules instead of a monolithic kernel.
I run monolithic kernels on servers and modules everywhere else.

I downloaded ndiswrapper, compiled it and now... i installed the winxp drivers (and tryed all others) from the installation cd... the card is being detected and the green light blinks BUT it still does not work.

The bit rate is at 1mbit/s, the power is off, it does not want to scan...

Thx for helpin out
