OK
Updating the portage tree...
livecd / # emerge --sync

gave me this

Notice:(-2 Name of service not known)

starting retry 1 pf 3 with rsync:rsync.uk.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage
checking server timestamp
rsync: getaddrinfo: rsync.uk.gentoo.org 873: temporary failure in name resolution
rsync error: error in socket IO code 10 at clientserver.c(88)
retry

and it does that 3 times before farting :(
any ideas?

DNS problems. Check /etc/resolv.conf.
