I use Compaq Presario 1700s notebook.

I installed gentoo V1.4 and now setting desktop enviroment.

I could start 'startx', but 'gdm' command didn't operate properly.
After entered 'gdm', LCD display blinked.

I can see xfree86 screen, but can't gdm.

What problem? :oops:

Do you have any error message after doing startx ? If yes would be usefull that you post it !
If it hangs, it's probably a problem with the drivers, could you boot X at any time and see a screen ?

Hi,
you need
> rc-update add xdm default
and in /etc/rc.conf you have to set:
DISPLAYMANAGER=gdm

Oh, thanx.
But that problem is not because of it.

I solved it.
Gdm and Gnome utilities need xfs(X font server) daemon. Xfree86 doesn't need xfs, but gdm and gnome need.

Need following :

Code:
$ rc-update add xfs default

Once again:

I'm not running the xfs and using gdm and gnome (sometimes)

I've tried all the commands/configurations in this thread and no luck. xdm and xfree work fine, but no gdm or gnome. I repeated the install of 1.4 rc3 and same results. Everything else appears to be fine. Thanks for any insights. -eric

I think you must try it on console terminal(not running xfree).
