hello,
some time ago i set up a new gentoo machine and i noticed a difference in the boot sequence to my gentoo machine that is installed since version 1.4.
on the newer machine (first installed 2005.0) the boot sequence is as follows:
Code:
* Mounting proc at /proc ... [ ok ]
* Mounting sysfs at /sys ... [ ok ]
* Mounting /dev for udev ... [ ok ]
* Configuring system to use udev ...
* Populating /dev with device nodes ...

on the machine where gentoo is installed a longer time:
Code:
* Mounting proc at /proc ... [ ok ]
* Mounting sysfs at /sys ... [ ok ]
* Mounting /dev for udev ... [ ok ]
* Configuring system to use udev ...

and as you can see the line with 'Populating /dev with device nodes ...' is missing but i dont know why?
please give me a hint...

It's just the newer machine has RC_DEVICE_TARBALL set to yes in /etc/conf.d/rc, and the older one has it set to no. The "Populating /dev with device nodes" message is printed when the init script restores the content of the device tarball to /dev.

is is better to set it to yes?

# UDEV OPTION:
# Set to "yes" if you want to save /dev to a tarball on shutdown
# and restore it on startup. This is useful if you have a lot of
# custom device nodes that udev does not handle/know about.

found it already. thx
