yo i would just like to say that after installing and having problems with setting Gentoo i am still quite happy using it. it is a bit of a learning curve coming from using windows for years and trying to remember what commands are but its been worth it. i will be using Gentoo/Linux for everything bar gaming from now on. i just have to find the respective apps to replace the ones i used to use for certain things in windows with their respective ones for linux.
i wasn't sure where to post this but since its the feedback forum i figured it fits here. _________________ {.Hackers} Ellimist |

Good choice making the switch, I think you'll love it more and more every day. A week doesn't go by that gentoo doesn't do something to impress me. It takes some time but you will find replacements for most of the applications you used in windows just take advantage of the great community and resourceful user forums here. |

No point in making my own thread, but another new windows --> linux by way of gentoo convert.
Friend of mine said gentoo was a good way to learn (and granted, after 2 months now, and several installs, I have learned a TON), I also got my boss at work to try gentoo.
I still have windows on my laptop that I use while I am school and work during the day, since there are programs I need that I haven't found replacements for yet, but I feel like im using a kiddie computer all day sometimes. I really I coming home and having my desktop. Even if I got KDE working in a windows like manner, I still feel like I have so much more control and things make much more sense when I boot my desktop.
Yea for gentoo! Thus far my introduction to the linux world has been eye-opening, and brought back my fading love for computers. |

I switched from windows to mandrake to gentoo and will never look back. I can't imagine ever accidentely deleteing portage like i did with the mandrake installer.
What i like about gentoo is the feeling or success when, after hours - weeks of trying, something works just prefectly. Take sound in kde for instance. |

Good to hear that new converts are satisfied! Now tell us which apps you are still looking for a replacement for, we might be able to help there. _________________ "Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

Gentoo sure is THE distribution, everyone I have introduced it to has absolutely loved it. I myself have learned most of my linux knowledge from Gentoo alone. Red Hat and Mandrake did nothing for my Linux experience and didn't keep my interest for long, then came Gentoo.. |

I'm even working to convert my fiancee. I originally tried gentoo because of growing concerns on where windows was going with DRM's and copy protection. Since I love it so much, I thought maybe I would see if I can show my fiancee the light. I burned a knoppix 4 cd last night and booted it on her computer for her. She got a kick out of kde, and said that during our winter break she wants to try and install gentoo.
I know there may be easier distrobutions to install and maintain, but I can help with that. And honestly, once running, I think emerge is about the easiest possible way to install programs. She learns computer stuff fast, and I love the way that portage handles everything for you once setup. |

Exactly how I feel. Now I can't get enough of Linux.

The thing I found with Red Hat and Suse were that its just a simple installer and then you're left with what is for the most part is a working OS. Then you have to go find stuff to learn, but with Gentoo, installing it is different and running it is different, it forces you to learn linux commands and such, which I particularly like about it. |

lol i took my time signing up coz i never needed help with Gentoo yet and still have not needed help |

indeed i'm another convert from windows -- my father has had gentoo for years and has constantly nagged me to install but i was once an avid gamer and couldn't be bothered changing over, then after getting far too many viruses/spyware i just gave up on windows altogether, backed up my mp3s and made the switch.
i've just managed to fix my ATI drivers (thank god), and i'm trying to figure a way around Half-Life 2! _________________ yes, i am new to gentoo. so don't bleeding well flame me! |

A windows convert here too, though I may miss some games (bf2 ). I havn't found stuff to totally replace the things I used to use, but I'm not giving up.
