So far, it's the best terminal emulater for me. Highly configurable, Multi-tab, Multi-language support, etc. The most important---it's very light, suck little resources.

Try it and u won't regret.

The size is compelling (smaller source than rxvt) but the tab GUI is kinda ugly.

Also breaks compatibility with rxvt commands :(

Don't care for the non-default font either. Removal of pixmap support would be cool (even smaller).

@wokick: Yes, it definitely rocks. Best VT so far!
My prefered feature is the XFT antialiased fonts (as rxvt) with a drop shadow (as eterm). It provides the clearest text I've ever read. 8)

@pjp: Indeed, the tabs are ugly. As I'm far from able to shoot some good pixmap replacement, I've preferred to get rid of them: no menu.

For thus who might need it, here's a sample conf (put that under your ~/.Xdefaults  ):
Code:
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
! MRXVT configuration !
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
mrxvt*vt0*saveLines:   1000
mrxvt*initTermNumber:   1
mrxvt*protectSecondary:   true
mrxvt*loginShell:   true
mrxvt*scrollBar:   false
mrxvt*transparent:   true
mrxvt*transparentScrollbar: true
mrxvt*transparentTabbar:    true
mrxvt*transparentMenubar:   true
mrxvt*foreground:   white
mrxvt*background:   black
mrxvt*backgroundFade:   50
mrxvt*fading:      20
mrxvt*textShadow:   black
mrxvt*textShadowMode:   botright
mrxvt*tabForeground:   white
mrxvt*tabBackground:   darkgray
mrxvt*itabForeground:   gray
mrxvt*itabBackground:   darkgray
mrxvt*tabPixmap:   false
mrxvt*syncTabTitle:   true
mrxvt*bottomTabbar:   true
mrxvt*windowsSwitch:   false
mrxvt*showMenu:      false
mrxvt*hideButtons:   true
mrxvt*xft:      true
mrxvt*xftFont:      Bitstream Vera Sans Mono
mrxvt*xftmFont:      Bitstream Vera Sans Mono
mrxvt*xftAntialias:   true
mrxvt*xftWeight:   bold
mrxvt*xftSlant:      roman
mrxvt*xftHinting:   true
mrxvt*xftAutoHint:   true
mrxvt*xftGlobalAdvance:   true
mrxvt*xftWidth:      normal
mrxvt*xftRGBA:      rgb
mrxvt*xftSize:      11
mrxvt*cursorBlink:   true
mrxvt*cursorBlinkInterval:500
mrxvt*geometry:      80x25
mrxvt*multichar_encoding:FR
mrxvt*inputMethod:   SCIM
mrxvt*cursorColor: yellow
mrxvt*color0:   black
mrxvt*color1:   #40e0d0
mrxvt*color2:   #87cefa
mrxvt*color3:   #ffff00
mrxvt*color4:   #d1eeee
mrxvt*color5:   #eed8ae
mrxvt*color6:   #b4eeb4
mrxvt*color7:   gray
mrxvt*color8:   gray40
mrxvt*color9:   #ee6363
mrxvt*color10:  #c5f779
mrxvt*color11:  #fff796
mrxvt*color12:  #00b2ee
mrxvt*color13:  #cf9ebe
mrxvt*color14:  #71bebe
mrxvt*color15:  white

By the way, if somebody is able to provide new pixmap replacement for the menu, it would be great to share them.

Agreed! Is a great term. Was using xterm before, and whilst screen is good I like tabs much better. Being able to switch tabs with SHIFT+arrow is a nice feature IMO.
Agree the tabs are ugly but teh funtionality keeps me there.

Giving this a shot... though I doubt I'm going to be able to get rid of my xterm-addiction. ;)

EDIT: Guess I won't... crashes at startup:

Code:
[brainiac]athas>% mrxvt
mrxvt: can't load font "-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--14-130-75-75-c-140-jisx0208.1983-0"
mrxvt: can't load font "-*-*-*-r-*-*-*-*-*-c-*-jisx0208*-0"
mrxvt: fatal error, aborting...

My .Xdefaults doesn't contain anything related to mrxvt. Hints?

Oh, and no, I don't have any of those fonts. I don't have anything like "jisx0208."

I get this too, even when I tried copying the mrxvt related stuff posted earlier in this thread into my .Xdefaults, it just seemed to ignore it.

There is a xgetdefault USE flag that I thought might be relevant, but emerging with it on/off makes no difference.

Also I tried starting it a particular font using the -font option, it gives no errors but still produces the above behaviour, its very annoying, so I'll guess I'll give up on this term for now :x

Yep... same here. No idea what's causing it...

@rezza, Corky, Athas
 I got almost the same error as you.
Code:
mrxvt: can't load font "-isas-song ti-medium-r-normal--16-160-72-72-c-160-gb2312.1980-0"
mrxvt: can't load font "-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-gb2312*-0"
mrxvt: fatal error, aborting...

I've fixed it by playing around with the multichar encoding. I assume that MRXVT requires this setting under your Xdefaults. At the beginning, as french, I've put FR for this value. However, as a secound thought, I've replaced it with noenc.
Code:
mrxvt*multichar_encoding:noenc

Hope this help.

I've been using multi-aterm myself. Seems to have a bug where clicking the mouse starts to spew kanji into the keyboard buffer after it's been running for a few days, but screen makes it easy as pie to restart, so I'm not especially bothered.

Also: Escreen really sucks. Don't bother with it.

It personally just annoyed me, so I am sticking with urxvt. :D For those of you that care to know why it annoyed me, it was the whole tabs thing and it poorly rendered the fonts compared to urxvt. For example, ~ was replaced with -.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the font rendering. It was far more configurable than urxvt, but I just couldn't get it looking the way I wanted. Oh, and the tabs are ugly as sin ;)

So bye-bye for now, mrxvt...

I was using multi-aterm myself. I just did it a try and it's mostly the same except it's actively maintained. By the way thanks Pem for finding the little trick to bypass the font crash. I guess I'll switch to this term thanks for the heads up !

By the way, I can't find any info on urxvt on google and neither in portage ... links anyone ? ^_^

[EDIT] If you don't like the tags use this switch (exerpt from the man page) :

Code:

-trm|+trm
              pseudo-transparent menubar background, pseudo-transparency  must
              be turned on [transparentMenubar]

The old gray and plain ugly tab bar will be blending in your background. It's pretty neat that way !

Er... which one? The maintainer of multi-aterm doesn't date his releases so it's hard to check, but the freshmeat entry was last updated on Sep 3, 2004 and a gentoo version bump occured the day after.

I was talking about multi-aterm. Since I installed it, I never had any update on it. It was over 2 months ago. If you check the change log of mxvt he has done way more updates than multi-aterm. I'm currently thinkering with mxvt but from the look of it i'll probably switch. At least when I add a tab it show it right away. I've always had troubles with the tab management of multi-aterm.

[edit] removed false statement saying that mrxvt was forked of multi-aterm, read too fast the news bit of September 15th on the website of mrxvt.

Well, I tried mrxvt out, but for some reason it won't inherit my .Xdefaults settings. My .Xdefaults looks like this:

Code:
XTerm.Background: black
XTerm.Foreground: white
XTerm.LoginShell: true
XTerm.ScrollbarRight: true
XTerm.Vt.SaveLines: 32767

What's wrong here?

What you are trying to use are classes. But for mrxvt you have to use this format :

Code:
mrxvt*options: value

Here's my section regarding mrxvt if it helps you :

Code:

mrxvt.geometry: 120x50
mrxvt*multichar_encoding:noenc
mrxvt*initTermNumber: 4
mrxvt*vt0*tabTitle:Localhost
mrxvt*vt1*tabTitle:LocalRoot
mrxvt*vt2*tabTitle:xxx
mrxvt*vt3*tabTitle:xxx
#mrxvt*vt0*session:/bin/zsh
mrxvt*vt1*session:su -
mrxvt*vt2*session:ssh xxx@xxx
mrxvt*vt3*session:ssh xxx@xxx
mrxvt*syncTabTitle:true
mrxvt*transparent:true
mrxvt*transparentScrollbar:true
mrxvt*transparentTabbar:true
mrxvt*transparentMenubar:true
mrxvt*foreground:White
mrxvt*background:Black
mrxvt*backgroundFade:60
mrxvt*font:-*-bitstream vera sans-medium-*-normal-*-0-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
mrxvt*boldfont:-*-bitstream vera sans-bold-*-normal-*-0-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
mrxvt*loginshell:true
mrxvt*savelines:32767
mrxvt*scrollBar_right:true
mrxvt*itabForeground:grey
mrxvt*tabForeground:white
mrxvt*hideButtons:true

The font lines are not finished yet, there have too much space in between but you should get the idea nevertheless.

Cheers !

Kio

@Duty and Kioshen
You can also set the XFT fonts library to handle your fonts. It's anti-aliased and it's able to cast a shadow that stress better the text out
Code:
mrxvt*xft: true
mrxvt*xftFont: Bitstream Vera Sans Mono
mrxvt*xftmFont: Bitstream Vera Sans Mono
mrxvt*xftAntialias: true
mrxvt*xftWeight: bold
mrxvt*xftSlant: roman
mrxvt*textShadow: black
mrxvt*textShadowMode: botright

To have an idea of the result, just have a look here.

Thanks Pem but I already knew about it. But since there was a big fat warning the faqs about how much slower there were I didn't bother with it. Maybe I should bench them before. The only thing I wanted was a lightweight multi-tab terminal emulater replacement for konsole.

How would you get it not to cast the text shadow? That made the text look fat and it annoyed me.

@Pwnz3r:
For withdrawing the shadow, comment out the following:
Code:
!mrxvt*textShadow: black
!mrxvt*textShadowMode: botright

If you don't want your text to look as fat as mine :? , you can also replace the weight of the XFT font:
Code:
mrxvt*xftWeight: normal

pem: I did that but the font rendering was still screwed up compared to how nicely it is done by urxvt. Basically, it was crammed together and ~ still was rendered as -.
