There was a thread several weeks ago about the various terms and aterm was mentioned. Since then I've been using it on and off since it is quite faster than teh gnome-terminal, but still can't figure out how to configure it! Is there any easy to follow guide out there someone could link me to?

More or less, I want a rather large font, a transparent, shaded panel, no boarders, and tabs. Well... I can't figure out how to do this! Any help will be apprecated.

You can start it with special commands or put all the options inside
Code:
.Xdefaults
( /home/you/.Xdefaults
and just start aterm with
Code:
aterm

insted of
Code:
aterm -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option -option

If you dont have a .Xdefaults file, create one, and ask google for some examples to get you started.

here is my .Xdefaults
to help you get started:

Code:

Xcursor.theme: Bluecurve
#Xcursor.size: 48

aterm*loginShell:true
aterm*transparent:true
aterm*shading:40
aterm*background:Black
aterm*foreground:White
aterm*scrollBar:true
aterm*scrollBar_right:true
aterm*transpscrollbar:true
aterm*saveLines:32767
aterm*font:-bitsteam-bitstream vera sans mono-*-r-*-*-*-120-75-75-*-*-*-*
aterm*scrollTtyOutput:false
aterm*fading: 60
aterm*color0:   black
aterm*color1:   #40e0d0
aterm*color2:   #87cefa
aterm*color3:   #ffff00
aterm*color4:   #d1eeee
aterm*color5:   #eed8ae
aterm*color6:   #b4eeb4
aterm*color7:   gray
aterm*color8:   gray40
aterm*color9:   #ee6363
aterm*color10:  #c5f779

aterm*color12:  #00b2ee
aterm*color13:  #cf9ebe
aterm*color14:  #71bebe
aterm*color15:  white
as for tabs, youll need to use a wm like fluxbox that supports tabs because aterm doesnt do tabs itself.

And here's my ~/.Xdefaults file. Make sure that you source it with xrdb -merge in your ~/.xsession or xdm/gdm/kdm startup scripts:

Code:

I'm especially fond of the "aterm.colorBD" and "aterm:colorUL" options: they make for a very nice effect when viewing bold letters in for example man or on the shell (ncftp).

Off-topic: Aterm has a big disadvantage - no unicode support. I switched to rxvt-unicode, which has the same configuration system (as do all good little X apps :) ), although few of the keywords are changed (manpage always helps).

If you want tabs, get mrxvt. It used to be called multi-aterm, and it's basically the same thing but a bit better. Also, reading man pages is good for your health. ^_~
