I was cleaning up a bit my ancient /etc files and came into make.conf. The use flags have been changed thousands of times since I first landed in Gentooland. But some of them remains.
An ancient vestige of my first Gentoo days is the "pic" use flag. Only gzip, glibc and libsdl do use that flag amongst all the packages that I have installed.
Gentoo says:
Code: |
pic - Build Position Independent Code. Do not utilize this flag unless you know what you're doing.
|
I know that this flag is related somewhat to prelinking and such (which, by the way, I don't use nor like). Can anyone tell me exactly what kind of issues are around this use flag (if there is any known issue at all)? As I said, that flag has always been there, and I did not notice any strange behaviour (note that glibc and gzip are critical programs). I just feel curious about this.
- Thanks in advance. |

Hi 6thpink,
I have that flag in my make.conf since I run a hardened profile, and if I'm not mistaken you need that flag as well if you're running an AMD64 system.
If you are not running a hardened system nor an AMD64 in 64 bit mode then I think it should be safe to remove that USE flag and recompile the affected packages.
Someone else correct me if I'm wrong. |
