Please give a lot of info on just how you came this this problem.

Did you just receive your computer in the mail and it won't turn on?

Has is ever booted?

What was the last thing you did with it?

yeah, it's booted. i've had it since last christmas. anyway, i was just downstairs getting my wifi-card, when i came up and noticed my laptop wasn't on (i had left it on). I pressed the power button, and nothing happened, and, after trying it with ac and dc, and even with another power cable, i came to the conclusion that it had fried somehow. how, i have no idea, but that is the only explanation that fits...

Try removing the battery, wait for ~ 5 mins, reinsert the battery and try to power on.

Yah! It seems to be fried...

Anyway, there is a big chance that it is only a power supply failure. So, your hardware might be intact. If that is not the case, the thing is soooooo bad, because the other posibilitie is that the mother board is completely fried.

yeah i once had this laptop on for a while, and left. When i came back the exhaust were freakin hot. Quickly checked the temp and turned it off (102C!!!!)

It was running BF2 (in M$ window$ btw) - scared the shit out of me.

edit: there's a reset button somewhere, push it. Sometimes the laptop could have some issues with the battery. Friend of mine had such a problem. Push on reset button -> reinserting battery and it worked.

yes look for a reset button on the bottom of the laptop. might be a small round silver metallic hole like thing. give it a shot!

first try the reset button. Will (hopefully) save you alot of pain.

Btw, resetting doesn't erase your hard disk :)

I suggest taking your best screwdriver and open it. You can get the hardware reference maual from www.ibm.com and u'll get the instructions to open it. and make sure u will remember what screw went where cuz everytime i open laptops there is always one screw i can't figure out where it's going!! lol. check if your cpu is damaged. on ebay, there is alot of motherboards for sale as i can remember..

ttyl

Try the things that people have suggested. Also check the clock battery. I doubt that's the problem, but people advise this in similar circumstances.

My ibm X30 failed in a similar way. It just stopped working one day. The fans whirred when I powered up, but that's all it did. (Same failure with a couple SGIs I once had -- louder fans, though).

I wouldn't panic, even if it's dead. If it's really kaput, take the hard drive out and put in another laptop or a 2.5 --> 3.5 ide adapter and try to use it in the other computer. You probably will be able to get your data. There is no guarantee, but I've been able to get data off hard drives even after some pretty gruesome computer failures. After you have your data, you can part out the dead one on Ebay.

Hi,

well, before you'll try to sell the rests of it on ebay, contact your local IBM support. A year ago, a friend of mine gave men a "broken" thinkpad. It showed a CRC error on boot, so there was no try to repair it. The hardware was complete and intact though (I mean all the other hardware but the motherboard ;) ).
I thought "why not give it a try" and contacted IBM. They told me, that I was lucky, because this model (it was one of the lasts with this "feature") had the not-so-well-thought  behaviour, that the BIOS data is written on boot and on shutdown (although only in a very short time). If the power fails, be it because the battery is empty, or because one didn't insert the battery and the external power supply fails, then only incomplete data gets written back on the motherboards CMOS, where the firmware resides   That seems to have happend to my friend.
Well, to conclude: IBM told me that there's been a goodwill offer from IBM until end of November last year for this particular model. --> I got the mainboard replaced for free!!!
Needless to say, that I like (love) IBM's support. Needless to say, too, that I am really sad that IBM does not have the Thinkpads anymore...

But for your case: why not give it a try?

Cheers, R.
