Quote: | Xara Xtreme is the world's fastest vector drawing program, by a huge margin. This is partly due to using the world's fastest vector rendering engine and partly due to the inherent Xara X architecture. In graphics software, performance matters. Performance is directly related to productivity (less waiting around) and also enables more rich, more complex designs to be created more easily. |
Well, if this is near true for the linux port, i say that cairo, inkscape, the desktops and all project with some interest on vectorial graphics shoul take a look at the brand new gpl code !!! |

Yes, I am also looking forward to an ebuild. But I doubt there will be one before the source code is released . I did not find a release date for the source code anywhere, but I believe it will be within the next two months.
Then, the official ebuild will take time, but I am sure there will be hand-made ebuilds available soon after the source code release.
EDIT:
Code: | $ ./XaraLX
./XaraLX: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory |
Hmm... the binary does not run on my machine. Oh well, it's late, good night... |

I run it, you basically can load the example files that the zip bring (there are pretty good), and done.
You can edit or create or anything else, as the page says is work on progress (or is malfunctioning on my machine ). |

yes, this program seems great! check out the video demos on their site, they look amazing...it will be a great benefit for the opensource community when this program will be released.also the cooperation between inkscape and xara seems very promising. _________________ Centrum Jêzyka Francuskiego VOILA - http://www.voila.edu.pl |

This is amazing! A dream come true! Santa received my letter!
The genie in the bottle granted my wish, man my hands are sore from all the rubbing!
Yes, I've been using Xara X för windows for quite a while and IMO it's absolutely wonderful.
This is THE killerapp for me, I can finally do a full linux-only installation.
I recently found out about Inkscape and it's impressive but I can't really compare it to Xara X yet though.
After all Xara X has been developed for quite a while. But hearing they are going to do some teamwork makes
things even more wonderful! This is going to be interesting to say the least. Hope it will work as flawlessly as
the win32 version... oh heck, I'm sure it will.

I posted an ebuild, here:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=126867
... but I still don't have much experience in making ebuilds ^_^ Still, it is emerged correctly... (but does not work for me... I get a "No handler found for XML node 'object', class 'wxCamArtControl'", when launching XaraLX, and there are no icons, toolbar, etc. in the main Xara LX windows... but I didn't try much more... maybe there is something about it in their bugzilla, but I don't have enough time to investigate, for now...) |

Same problem here. (I built it directly rather than through the ebuild) I'm not sure what the problem is but my best guess is that the toolbar info is in XML format and isn't being accessed correctly. (just a guess)
If anybody figures this out... post the fix. I really want to try this stuff out. _________________ "...as we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours, and this we should do freely and generously." -Benjamin Franklin |

Bummer. I had read that wxWidgets 2.6.3-rc2 includes alot of fixes needed for Xara to work correctly. From the bug you posted it looks like all other Gentoo users are having the same problem. Hope they get this sorted out soon. _________________ "...as we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours, and this we should do freely and generously." -Benjamin Franklin |

For those who haven't see them yet, there are a few videos on the official site:
http://www.xaraxtreme.org/about/movies.html
IMHO they are really impressive. I'm not an expert at graphics software, but it looks like Xara is far more powerful, faster and has a nicer interface than Inkscape. If they ever finished the conversion, I think it will become one of the most important OSS app.
By the way, if you just want to try the demo, you don't have to compile it. You can just use the binary version, which I think has every needed libs (wxWidgets for one) compiled statically or something. |

Install Klik
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=12841
Emerge rpm and its dependencies first and be sure cramfs is in the kernel as a module or built-in. There may be other dependencies, but these are the ones that caught me. Load the module if need be.
Restart your browser - Klik adds a mime-type - then go here:
http://xara-latest.klik.atekon.de/
It's all surprisingly automatic. I also installed LSongs and LPhoto just for fun. |

I downloaded the 'recommended' version from the xara website at xaraxtreme.org yesterday, which turned out to be a binary. It runs perfectly. It actually has improved from the last time I used Xara, which was shortly after Corel bought it and released it as a stand-alone product before integrating all its good bits in Corel Draw itself (at least as far as I gather from quickly looking at such features as shadows, transparency etc.)

I am waiting for its ability to create text object. Or is it just me? I tried it, and it wouldn't let my create text. _________________ "There will be more joy in heaven over the tear-bathed face of a repentant sinner than over the white robes of a hundred just men." (LM, 114) |

It has been fixed :)
I don't know since when exactly, but http://downloads.xara.com/opensource/XaraLX-0.3r752.tar.bz2 works nicely for me :)
Ebuild here: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=126867
