Hi forum!

I am trying to install gentoo on some Alphastation 500/333 and regulary fail.

I did install stage 3, did install portage, did the chroot, env-update and source /etc/profile.

When I run emerge --quiet --sync I always (tried 3 times) get this Aiee:

Code:

Kernel panic: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!
In interrupt handler - not syncing

Maybe important: I started the installation from install-alpha-minimal-2005.1.iso, and need to boot with option1, since with option 0 I have no network access, eth0 is detected, I can set the address, but Network is unreachable is all, that I see.

And maybe important too: I could not mke2fs with kernel 1, since it crashes similar. But nwo I need the disk *and* the network, any Idea?

When turning power on, I see that typical blue SRM background ant it says 'Digital AlphaStation 500/333 Console V5.0-13 build on Jan 25 1996 at 14:19:23
Do I need to upgrade? If yes, please be so kind and tell me how.

First check and see if there's a newer SRM console available for your Alpha. I have a PC164 eval board (uses EV56 @ 500Mhz) and the latest release for my board is 5.5.

Second, which kernel are you running 2.4 or 2.6? Certain models seem to be more stable on the 2.4 kernel although I think it's just the EV6 machines that have some issues with 2.6. I'm running 2.6 perfectly 100% stable on my PC164.

Lastly make sure you don't have flaky hardware, loose connections, or whatnot. Do other OS's load and run just fine on your machine? FreeBSD? Tru64? OpenVMS? If other OS's on the same box are crashing and having issues, it's most likely a hardware problem.

Didn't try any other OS, didn't upgrade SRM.

But I checked the SCSI terminators, and there was one (jumpered) on the *original* CDROM drive and an active terminator at the end of the cable.

I swear, that I did not touch the hardware and that this machine was running with these two terminators from the very start in '96 until Nov. 04 in my company with the preinstalled OS.

Fscking terminator!

However, thanks!
