Using kernel 2.6.13-r4. Hacked up the 8.16.20 ebuild - I had to comment out the epatch line for ioctl patch. After that, emerged and rebooted and it's working! Not sure what the differences are, and the posted change made no difference to me, but whatever... it works. 8)

They don't work for me! I've been running ati-drivers up to 8.14.13-r5 happily (they've work), but after this version incl. 8.18.6 the drivers give me a black screen on startx. Any ideas?

Here's some of my Xorg.0.log.old:

has something to do with the error?

Anybody else had similar issues? Any ideas?

I get this black screen with the last 3 ati-drivers. And only if I use the current mainboard bios. With an old bios the fglrx runs. Maybe they changed something in the agp part of the bios. My Xorg.0.log.old shows no errors.

Do these divers support 1024x768?

John

EDIT: Sorry meant 1200 x 800

Of course, all video drivers should support this resolution.

Even 1280x800.
For now (and for me) only in AMD64, not tried yet x86.

I've got that resolution working on my HP Pavilion zv6000 laptop using x86 and the new 8.18.16 ati-drivers. Just had to add the new Mode to my xorg.conf after the emerge.

Code:
Section "Screen"
    Identifier  "Screen0"
    Device      "ATI Graphics Adapter"
    Monitor     "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    #Option "backingstore"

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       24
        Modes       "1280x800" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort    0 0  # initial origin if mode is smaller than desktop
#        Virtual     1280 1024
    EndSubsection
EndSection

I've had `Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"' with ati for last half a year (now ati-drivers-8.18.6 & gentoo-sources-2.6.12-r10)

I upgraded to 8.18.6 and 1280 x 800 works well. I was experiencing problems with this mode with the 8.18.20 drivers, but they seem to be fixed. Here is a topic where people were having a similar problem with the old drivers: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-373422-highlight-ati+1200+800.html

Can someone tell me if those ATI-drivers work well on AMD64 now?

Last time I've checked for ATI (when I was buying graphic card one year ago), ATI didn't have 3D support for AMD64 linux and those ATI drivers were messed up a lot.

What's the situation now?

Do drivers work well, just as NVidia's or what?
