Hello,

I have a very crippled system. I have done the following in the last 24 hours:

1) First reboot since packages were updated last week
2) Tried to recover deleted files using 2005.1 liveCd and 'reiserfsck --rebuild-tree -S /dev/hdb3' (hdb3 is root vol)

I get numerous errors on bootup, but i can't record them as they fly by too quickly. Here's what I get at the end:

Code:
/sbin/rc:  line 831:  service_started: command not found
/sbin/rc:  line 831:  schedule_service_started: command not found

This repeats over and over and fills up my hi-res console. I looked at /sbin/rc and traced its operation to /lib/rcscripts/sh/ - there are 3 files but they are 4 bytes or less in size.

My favourite:
Code:
-bash: /usr/bin/cat: cannot execute binary file

I did some digging and have tried the following:

Code:
emerge -D baselayout
>>> emerge (1 of 1) sys-apps/baselayout-1.11.13r1 to /

/usr/portage/eclass/flag-o-matic.eclass: line 1: command ---: not found
/usr/portage/eclass/flag-o-matic.eclass: line 2: command +++: not found
/usr/portage/eclass/flag-o-matic.eclass: line 3: command @@: not found
/usr/portage/eclass/flag-o-matic.eclass: line 7: command +#: not found
/usr/portage/eclass/flag-o-matic.eclass: line 8: syntax error near unexpected token `then'
/usr/portage/eclass/flag-o-matic.eclass: line 8: `+if [ "x$EGREP" = x ] ; then'

!!! ERROR: sys-apps/baselayout-1.11.13r1 failed
!!! Function inherit, Line 1444, Exitcode 1
!!! died sourcing /usr/portage/eclass/flag-o-matic.eclass in inherit()

I appreciate your help! Due to the state of the system, i'll have to be able to get any new files in by CD. It also seems that the commands i have available are very limited, meaning I might have to make repairs from LiveCD. Thanks!

Started contemplating a fresh rebuild, but there's about 40GB of files that I don't want to lose. Too bad, they're already gone! :(

I'm assuming that since my disk usage has nearly doubled, the files I'm looking for are buried in the maze of /lost+found. It seems logical then that the system corruption could also be due to the reiserfs rebuild I did before. Something else I figured out, but don't know if it's relevant. My RAID1 is broken right now while one disk is out on RMA. The file system type is fd, but the md device is formatted reiser. I mounted the hard drive as a reiser FS, which may have had something to do with all of this.

Does anyone have the silver bullet?

The fact that it's saying 'cannot execute binary file', makes it look more like you built your binaries with the wrong CFLAGS or something.

Thanks for taking a stab. I didn't recompile anything. Some research I've done seems to suggest that some part of the system is not loading, preventing binaries from executing (binfmt?). Strange thing is most of my kernel is monolithic. Oh well I guess I'll be rebuilding this weekend, wooop!
