I am trying to do a stage 1 on a laptop of mine. However, it can't use ethernet because I have no adapter things for the ethernet cards I have for it (lost them somehow). So, can anyone tell me how to use the built in ISA Modem that I have in order to start this all up? I just needs to know how to set it up properly so I can use the internet on it through dial up or whatever. More than one option would be nice in case one option doesnt work, it'll save me time. Btw, just for reference, net-setup eth0 won't detect my modem and my modem isnt auto detected. Thanks a lot. |

Yuusou,
You cannot do a stage 1 using a modem.
Well, I suppose you can but you will be downloading several CDs worth of data during the course of the install, so it will take a very long time.
How you get your modem going depends on what modem it is.
Your best bet is a stage 3 networkless install. _________________ Regards,

... or put your hdd in a computer with supported hardware and build the system there, compile a kernel with all necessary drivers for the notebook, emerge pcmcia-cs and there you go.
I've built my notebook's system in an AthlonXP 2500, it's much faster that way.
BTW, how do you want to use a computer without network connection ? Is that possible today ? |

when all I use it for is school, it's very possible actually . Anyways, I just need to know where to find a manual on how to setup an ISA modem. If I can't find a spot, then I'll do a universal stage 3, but I'd much rather do a stage 1 because I have done stage 3 on another person's computer before and I didn't like the results. I guess I'm just a stage 1 kind of person |

Yuusou,
You will die of old age fetching several Gb down a modem.
The liveCD does not support modems - try a knoppix liveCD.
You will still need to know what it is - if its a real hardware modem, it will look like a serial port.
If its a Winmodem then its a challenge even when you are in control of your own kernel.
Start reading at linmodems.org
If you are determined to do a stage 1, you cam make portage tell you what files you need, fetch them on another PC, then move them with a CD or USB drive. Sneakernet will be much faster than internet for you. The minimal liveCD has a run from memory mode, so you can unmount the liveCD. _________________ Regards,
