I have posted this question in three different places and yet have not recieved a deffinate answer. So I will start over and hopefully someone can pont me in the right dir.
My system: Custom Built
AMD 1.2 Ghz Duron
Asus motherboard (A7V 133) If i remember correct.
40 Gig WD HD
Xtasy Nvidia Geforce 4 64 Meg
Sound Blaster Live Sound card
USB 10/100 Nic card
IBM 21" Monitor
Partitions: was 40 Gig Win XP
Now: 30 gig Win XP
100 Meg Boot
384 Meg swap
7.6 Gig ext2
Ok, I downloaded the latest ISO for step 1. i get as far as:
Code listing 9.1: Updating Using sync
# emerge sync
# export CONFIG_PROTECT="-*"
# export USE="-* bootstrap build"
# emerge portage <here is the problem>
# unset USE
I get the following errors.
Configure Error: C++ preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails security check
!!! Error: sys-libs /ncurses-5.3-r1: failed
!!! Function Econf, line 353, Exite code 1
!!! Econf failed
Now I have read and read post that are simular to this. From what I understand most people are having problems with emerge on the next step after this one. Causing the make.conf file to be over written.
From what I've read in the install docs is that I am not to edit the make.conf file until after this step. And the workaround on the next step would be to export CONFIG_PROTECT= "/etc/make.conf" as the workaround to keep your make.conf file intact.
So my questions are why am I getting this error? Is it my make.conf file causing the problem? Am I suppose to edit make.conf before this step or after? And lastly is it best to download step1 tar from gentoo.org or just use the one on the CD? Please any help would be very much appreciated and would like to takle this wednesday night if possable.

No I have just followed the instructions. I can probably guess as to what this command does, but could you explain exactly. What is the differnce between this command and the one in the inst manual? _________________ Never too old to learn! |
