Installing stage 3 on a Pentium Celeron e-machines.
I get a hangup at instal line
Code:
*Coldplugging pnp devices...

it just stalls there. I can move the mouse, and the cursor flashes.

It says early in the install...
Code:
gentoo.igz...
Ready.
You passed an undefined mode number

Didn't seem right, I don't know if that helps.

Thank you guys in advance for the help.

This error is caused by a fault in your bootloader kernel parameters. You probably specified a vga mode where one isn't necessary (or the mode is oncorrect) post your grub.conf or lilo config so we can see if it is correct. I'm fairly certain this has nothing to do with your problem though.

You probabyl have a problme with one of your kernel modules, I would recommend booting from the liveCD, chrooting into your gentoo system and removing coldplug from starting at boot. Next add any kernel modules you KNOW you need to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 then see if the system throws any errors when it boots.

Boot the livecd, mount your partitions, chroot and edit /etc/grub.conf. Just as described in the handbook.

Ok, framebuffer problem.
Boot the livecd with the gentoo-nofb kernel.
Next make sure you configure your kernel and include a framebuffer driver that supports your graphics card. Then make sure you put in a valid videomode in you grub.conf.

If you use the search feature of the forums and use the error message as keywords you should fine enough threads to help you solve the problem.

Do you still get the "You passed an undefined mode number" error with the gentoo-nofb kernel? Or another one?

Bounce! Avoiding the problem does not solve it. Can it be solved?

Does anyone still have this problem with the LiveCD? Even the new LiveCD doesn't boot for me. Instead it hangs at the line
Code:

*Coldplugging pnp devices...

WHat are your system specs?

It could be as easy as the system being really slow.

On my old box when I installed gentoo the Coldplugging took maybe half an hour? 45 minutes?

45 minutes??? Wow. I have a Celeron II 1.2 GH with 256 M RAM, so it is a rather slow computer. First time I waited like 20 minutes or so, then I determined it was frozen.

I am having the same problem. I am trying to boot the installer livecd on a dual Xeon system and it is stalling at the same point. It is not just taking a long time (dual 2GHz Xeons with 1GB of RAM shouldn't be too slow), I popped in the disk, hit the power button and watched it stall out at 6:45am, it was still stalled when I went home for lunch at 12:45pm.

I'll reboot check the output for any error messages and then try the -nofb option to see if this fixes the problem. This computer was a CAD workstation in a former life, I am pretty sure it is equipped with either an Nvidia Quadro or an ATI FireGL GPU. Also, when it is booting it shows a pretty startup screen and I have to hit a button for verbose mode to see the "coldplugging ..." messages, so I think that there is a framebuffer working at some level.

Does anyone know where the startup kernel and init messages are logged? dmesg? /var/log/messages?

Thanks for the help in advance.

--- edit ---
The -nofb kernel did not perform any better. There are other problems with this system that are probably causing this behavior, I am pretty sure the motherboard is toast.

I have been unable to get it working, so I have returned it to its owner. He knows some folks at the manufacturer and is taking it in to have his buddies test and fix it (or dismantle it for parts depending on the problem).

Sorry I am not able to stick this out and determine the solution, but with buggy/failing hardware it was probably impossible to make it work anyways.

I have this same problem with both the 2006.1 and 2006.0 live cd's. The computer I'm trying to install this on is a celeron 700mhz with 512mb ram. I think it is something wrong with detecting the video device because at the start of the process it says I have specified an undefined number, and to enter the correct mode or hit spacebar. It continues on through this point without a problem then it just stalls at coldplugging pnp devices. This is the exact computer.... http://reviews.cnet.com/Pavilion_6830_Minitower_C_700MHz/4507-3118_7-6234453.html?tag=sub

Well, using gentoo-nofb nodetect it got through it all, but cannot start X. It outputs Fatal server error: no screens found, XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining. Does anyone know how to get the Intel 810 graphics to work??
