i just installed Point2Play and Cedega (obviously) and my PC fails the 3d acceleration tests and it can't seem to detect my card past having 128megs of RAM. it's an ATI 9200 (possibly higher) and I'm not entirely what I should be doing, could someone give me a headstart?

Try

glxinfo | grep rendering

It will show if you have 3D rendering working at all. If not, then you don't have working drivers installed/configured.

emerge ati-drivers

then modprobe ati

then you gotta edit xorg.conf and restart X

hey, thanks a bunch, i got through all this. but i'm fairly certain i put in an incorrect refresh rate by accident. so when the x server starts up the monitor conks out. and it is currently configured to go straight into x server without waiting for login/prompt. how can i get it to halt before going into x? incredibly stupid question, i know. :(

use [ctrl] + [alt] + [f1] to switch to text only.

login

run 'rc-update del xdm' (without quotes)
and this should remove xdm from your startup.
Now you can reboot without having to bail out of your X session before going elsewhere.

use startx to fire up your X server manually.
use [ctrl] + [alt] + [backspace] several times to stop the X server.

Just run 'rc-update add xdm default' when you're happy with your X server.

Will.
