i'm getting this strange udev error when i plug something into usb:
udev[12384]: segfault at 0000000000000000 rip 0000000000407760 rsp 00007fffffffec88 error 6
edit: on boot, i noticed that udevstart also showed a segfault. this was using udev 070. i reverted to 058, and udev works now. i'm on amd64 if that matters. |

Seeing the same on a 3.4GHz Intel P4 laptop, but up and running perfect on a 2.4GHz P4. _________________ -Steve- |

Similar problem here: I cannot boot the system with udev-070. I have the same segmentation fault and then a fatal error on /dev/hda1.
I'm on amd64, too.
I reverted to udev 068-r1 and all functioned well. It seems to be a bug of the new udev release. |

I have the same problem on amd64, and my system is pretty well fucked. I get lots of udev related error messages on boot, and then an emergency maintenance boot prompt. My root partition is on a striped raid array, but I have no /dev/md devices, and when I try to emerge an older version of udev I get an error about /var/tmp/portage being read-only.
BOLLOCKS
How do I recover this without a very tedious process involving a livecd? |

OK, further to my previous post:
According to /etc/mtab, / is mounted on 'rootfs' and is mounted rw, despite the read-only error when I try to emerge anything. Also, I have only root and home partitions i.e. /usr and /var are all under the / partition.
Interestingly, if I:I get a load of md* devices appearing under /dev.
So, does anyone know if it is possible to either:
a) move my mounted root partition from 'rootfs' to /dev/md0, while the system is running (seems unlikely to me....)?
b) create a persistent /dev/md0 that will survive a reboot, instead of relying on udev to create it?
Grateful for any suggestions.... |

You need to upgrade to 070-r1 to fix the segfaults. |

Yes, I would do that if I could actually emerge anything....... |

just plug in the livecd in your drive and emerge the new udev with that _________________ Programming today is a race between Software Engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof Programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots.

Yes, I could do that, but that means remembering how to mount my raid-0 root partition (I haven't set up any raid arrays since I originally did this install nearly 2 years ago). I will probably have to do this, I was just searching for an easier/quicker way, cos I'm lazy...... |
