DRI with framebuffer X (is it possible?)

My video card is dying, and I was getting all sorts of screen artifacts and just plain corruption with X. I tried switching the driver to the framebuffer and now everything works...except for DRI. I have enabled all the DRI stuff in my xorg.conf, but I still don't get direct rendering. I have a feeling that it won't work, but I was hoping maybe somebody figured out how to get DRI, even if I am using fbdev as my driver rather than tdfx? My video card is VooDoo3, by the way.
