Login Problems

okay, im having problems with gnome. upgraded to 2.12 just fine (no errors).
after "emerge --sync" i started to get error messages during logins:
configuration error - unknown item 'FAILLOG_ENAB'
"" LASTLOG_ENAB
"" MOTB_FILE
"" FMTP_FILE
"" ENV_ROOTPATH
"" PASS_MEN_LEN
"" CHFN_AUTH

now gnome wont load my user at all, just stops loading after the login screen.

although i know panicing wont help, im starting to anyway, lots of data to backup

any advice or insight is appreciated Alot.

Try etc-update and see if that will fix it.

etc-update returns errors, invalid token, and nano freaks out when i try to edit it. overlays the text of the file with gibberish, indicates im using metakeys (which im not.)

im concerned my system is screwed.

alright. ive made some progress, but im not solved yet.
etc-update now works, after changing /etc/make.conf with vi on the livecd.
