Dear All,
I am currently running the 2.6.14-rc3-nitro1 kernel and require ipw2100 support. This is now provided by the kernel and emerging the driver manually fails. I have compiled ieee2011 and ipw2100 as modules and I am running udev-071. On boot up the ipw2100 driver fails to load because of the well documented firmware error:
Code:
ipw2100: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Driver, 1.1.0
ipw2100: Copyright(c) 2003-2004 Intel Corporation
ipw2100: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection
ipw2100: eth2: Firmware 'ipw2100-1.3.fw' not available or load failed.
ipw2100: eth2: ipw2100_get_firmware failed: -2
ipw2100: eth2: Failed to power on the adapter.
ipw2100: eth2: Failed to start the firmware.
ipw2100Error calling register_netdev.
ipw2100: probe of 0000:02:02.0 failed with error -5

I have ensured my firmware files are in all possible locations /lib/firmware, /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware etc, etc.
Doing a:
Code:
modprobe -r ipw2100
modprobe ipw2100

manages to load to the module into a functional state indicating a bug within udev (probably all versions after 058) but now my dmesg is flooded with the following error:
Code:

ieee80211_crypt: unregistered algorithm 'NULL' (deinit)
ieee80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'NULL'
ipw2100: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Driver, 1.1.0
ipw2100: Copyright(c) 2003-2004 Intel Corporation
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:02:02.0[A] -> Link [C0C5] -> GSI 5 (level, low) -> IRQ 5
ipw2100: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection

This is a real pain the arse because no other posts resolve the issue and I think I am experiencing 2 bugs (the kernel driver and udev-071). I can resort to udev-058 but automounting of usb devices does not work with this version.
This "Driver using old /proc/net/wireless support, please fix driver" is mentioned on the ipw2100 site and was an issue with an older version of the emergable driver. It seems as though the driver included with my kernel is an old buggy version.
Does anyone have any suggestions.
I have been having lots of problems recently with so called stable packages. I have not had many problems in the past but it seems there is current trend in releasing unstable packages which we are forced to use because the old equivalent (which worked fine) is "unstable" or "deprecated". If we are forced to make these changes then at least working packages should be available with good documentation.
Cheers,
Sat

2.6.14 kernel includes old versions of ipw2100 and ipw2200. I don't know exactly why. Anyway IIRC the message thing is solved in vanilla rc4.
And note that 2.6.14 have not yet been released (current version is rc5), so you may not pretend it's stable.
