I'm clueless when it comes to wireless networking

I'm working with my new IBM laptop, and wireless networking is completely new for me. Most of the time I use my normal ethernet connection, and I wish to configure my book to be able to connect to any access point I might come across (encrypted, unencrypted, etc.). I've already emerged ipw2200 and the kernel recognizes my wireless card, could someone please help me a bit about the next steps? I tried reading some manuals, but they all assume some degree of understanding of the matter which I, unfortunately, lack.

Have you taken a look at this Genoo doc: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=4&chap=4 ??

It goes over two types of configuration either WPA Supplicant or Wireless Tools.
