Hey folks, i now have adsl and i thought that i dont have to use windows anymore to surf over internet, now i have the problem, i received an adsl modem from the telecom italia but i received no linux driver for it. i can connect the modem over usb to the computer, or over ethernet, but how to installit it??? does anybody have an idea?????

Is the modem internal or external? Do you have a link to the product online we can see?

Yes the modem is external, the problem is that one, theres no destriction for the modem, its just extern and i can connect the modem to the pc with usb or ethernet...

All you probably need is an ordinary ethernet card in your computer and setup PPPoE. That depends on your provider though. What provider are you using?

Does your provider require and username and password to connect over the DSL modem.. if so then you're going to need to setup PPPoE (PPP Over Ethernet). Verizon does this here in the states. probably the best software to handle it is rpppoe (I think its how it is... its roaring penguin pppoe)...

If you have an ethernet network card in your computer, then that would be the best way to connect the modem.

If you are dual booting and have Windows installed on the machine, then the easiest way to get the modem configured properly, would be to configure it in Windows using the software that should have come with the modem. I don't speak Italian, but I found installation instructions for Windows on the website for your DSL provider. Once you can use the modem to connect to the internet from Windows, we should be able to help you connect from Gentoo. (because then we can have you check various network settings in Windows and tell us what they are)

Yes i need Username and Password, can sombeody tell me howto install the modem, and howto install ppooee and where to get it??? a little how-to would be really nice

can you tell me the whole eth0 path please??? is it gedit /etc/conf/net.eth0 ???

Ok i have the HOWTO but there stands:

emerge net-dialup/rp-pppoe

how shall i do that without internet??? the file isnt in my portage, is there an other way to install it?
