I am having some problems getting gdesklets up and running...

Quote:

gdesklets
Starting gdesklets-daemon...
Cannot establish connection to daemon: timeout!
The log file might help you solving the problem.

How can I get to the logfile?

I'm having the same problem too.
The log file is empty (it actually shows the 1st line that says everything will be logged in it...).
gdesklets check says everything is ok.

ok what I did is to clean out the following:

~/.gdesklets/*.pid
~/.gdesklets/sockets/*
~/.gdesklets/logs/*

and then ran

Code:
gdesklets start
Starting gdesklets-daemon...
Connected to daemon in 523 milliseconds.

Well, since gdesklets is python based, have you updated python thru portage?

If so, have you run the python-updater to migrate links and such?

Since I'm not so great in python, well, this is all that I can think of suggesting. :)

Got same problem... python-updater does not work,
not a clue what to do.

it trys to connect and nothing happens...

and fails on both machines of mine;
K8 and P4
then
not a compile problem with -march

any clue that is the problem then?

thanks

Ok, so then let's start at the beginning then.

1) Did it ever work?

2) If so, what was the last thing that was done before it broke?

1st I emerge -Dav gdesklets-core
2nd on Gnome had tryed to run it from menu, symptoms:
-Opens a 'welcome window first run';
-Opens then a blank one;
-Program do a clean exit;

3rd by command line/shell
-Starts the server and tries to connect then fails;

4th I had run phyton-updater
-No previous versions found

5th I ran revdep-rebuild
-System ok

6th Re-emerged gdesklets-core
-go back to pass 1st

7th Make a search in the forum....
-Found same symptoms;

now im here :)

any guess? no error on logs. only remaining pid files...
I had try on boths machines cos march flag is diferent... Same problem on both

From what you posted, it would appear that you have no desklets installed.

You have the core files installed, but not the specific desklets that you want.

Those desklet-whatever that you see listed, are the desklets themselves.
Try installing at least one and then try restarting gdesklets.

It seens not to be the desklets that are missing...
I had follow your advice... makes the same blank window
in the term:
Code:
$ gdesklets
A iniciar o gdesklets-daemon...
A estabelecer ligação ao daemon [          ###]

then

Code:
Cannot establish connection to daemon: timeout! ]
The log file might help you solving the problem.

I had this same problem. I made a post about it, but I couldn't figure it out. I tried rebuilding the tool chain and then the world to make sure everything was fresh. I ended up just removing it and doing without.

So what happens if you re/move your ~/.gdesklets file and then restart it?

I removed ~/.gdesklets and got the same error.

couple of things:

1) I haven't had gdesklets installed before.
2) It never ran before.
3) I do have clock desklet installed.

I don't know what else to do....

Well, I installed gdesklets for the first time yesterday and it's giving the same error posted above.

I've done some tests based on what you guys tried and noted that the error is a "104 - Connection reset by peer".

I have another computer with Ubuntu and gdesklets works there. It's on version 0.35.3, but even if I try to downgrade my gentoo version of gdesklets the problem is still the same. And I checked the .gdesklets directory in both systems, but they are equal.

Apparently, the daemon isn't responding. Maybe the problem is with the system?

gnome-screenshot works fine for me.

I don't know....emerging everything would be a headache...this is a slow machine, Sempron 2500+ CPU...
For the one who is still getting timeout errors, I got rid of the timeout error when connecting to the daemon by removing everything under ~/.gedesklets.

The error is the same what I posted before:

Code:
Starting gdesklets-daemon...
Connected to daemon in 2305 milliseconds.
