When running firefox (compiled from mozilla-firefox, not mozilla-firefox-bin)[/code] and mozilla, it seems both have a problem accessing the majority of the URL's I enter. Neither seem to have issues with mozilla.org or gentoo.com and a few select others but for example, google.com will either take 5 minutes to load or timeout. I boot Windows XP from the same machine (AMD64 system) on the same network card and have no problems with browsing.

top shows that is taking up next to nothing in terms of CPU use and memory when google.com is "loading"

My USE flags are set as follows:
Code:
USE="X aac aalib aim alsa apache2 avi bzip2 cdb cdr crypt cups dedicated dga divx4linux dri dv dvd dvdr emacs encode ffmpeg flash foomaticdb ftp gif ginac glut gnome gphoto2 gtk gtk2 hardened icq ieee1394 jabber java javascript joystick jpeg junit kde leim libg++ libwww lm_sensors mad mcal mime ming mozilla mp3 mpeg multilib mysql mysqli nocd oci8 odbc ogg opengl oracle7 oracle oscar oss pdflib perl php png quicktime readline sockets speex spell svga tcpd tidy tiff truetype usb vcd videos win32codecs xine xmms xpm xprint xv xvid zlib nvidia"

Am I missing something or including something that I shouldn't? Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Sean

Have you tried launching firefox from the console and see if any error messages are put out?

Yes, the only output is "No running windows found" when initially launching the browser. I might also mention that every site, including those that either don't load or take 5 minutes to load, ping just fine.

Try bulding it with debug support and you will get alot more output...
Code:
USE="debug" emerge mozilla-firefox

Then see what output you get.

with the debug flag set for mozilla-firefox-bin, I receive the following output when running firefox-bin and attempting to open google.com.

Code:
No running windows found
Removing /home/sean/.mozilla/firefox/st1nqbpx.default/compreg.dat leftover from older firefox
Removing /home/sean/.mozilla/firefox/st1nqbpx.default/XUL.mfas1 leftover from older firefox

I continue to have problems with mozilla, mozilla-firefox, mozilla-firefox-bin, and lynx. But, links has 0 problems accessing URL's that give the other browsers problems. Every so often for no apparent reason, one of the mozilla's will actually open google.com.

Having similar on/off problems connecting to gaim ... possibly related.

Hmm...I'm not sure what the extension manager does, but do you have the problem when running as root?

Yep, as root and a normal user ... Those messages only come up though when I first launch the browser, and nothing follows after trying to access google.com.

Ok, I have seen this problem before somewhere. My problem was that my loopback interface wasn't present, so make sure you still have the file /etc/init.d/net.lo
