Why is "updating portage cache" taking longer.. and longer..

Hi,

although i am syncing every three or four days, the part "updating portage cache" is extremely slow. Why?
In three or four days there are not enough changes to justify about 10 minutes for this update in my eyes.

Its every time a pain to sync portage. And it's a 2.8 GHz-machine(!!) should actually be enough to be speedy...
Additionally, i've got this effect on other machines, too.

Do i have to clean up something that's not done automatically?

Portage is getting bigger and bigger, everyone has those problems..
