am having other troubles extracting snapshot and in searching thru my file structure i notice a folder in /mnt/gentoo/usr that is i386-pc-linux-gnu NOT i586-pc-linux-gnu. WHY? IS this a problem that i need to head off now?

To clarify....

would the folder in the portage folder be named i586... or i386... or is it not even related. I changed CHOST to i586-pc-linux-gnu during the install.

It just hit me... i've only downloaded the tarball and extracted. i haven't compiled anything. Maybe the bootstrap script will handle this..

Would sure like some reassurance here... :wink:

don't go changing CHOSTS. you're not supposed to do that.

please post the following:

1. the name of your tarball
2. your PC's processor type
3. the contents of make.conf

Am doing a STAGE 1, so, uh, I believe i can change CHOSTS.

As for your requested info:

tarball: stage1-x86-2005.1.tar.bz2
processor: AMD k6-2 3D
make.conf:
Code:

CHOST="i586-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=k6-2 -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
USE="-gtk -gnome X qt kde -dvd -alsa apache2"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"

BTW, am now in the middle of building the system (# emerge --emptytree system). So far no probs so this may be a moot point.

yes, according to standard gentoo conventions you can change chosts if and only if you're bootstrapping a stage 1. if you run into more problems with references to a 386 library, an extra emerge -e system should take care of it.

All seems to be fine....so far. It does appear that i586 referneces are being used> Fingers crossed. Am up to 18 of 91 packages to emerge. Just how long can i expect this to take on my snail-like 500mHz K6-2???
