ok, i installed gentoo tonight and everything went fine except i mad a dumb newb error right at the end of my install. I previously had lilo installed and already configured and for some dumb reason i thought it would still be there so i didn't bother to set up a boot loader when installing gentoo  Anyways, i tried my boot floppy, and it halts, tried booting off the cd, but couldn't get that to work. So... after spending all my time installing.. am i screwed or is there some easy fix for this newb mistake?

Thanks in advance.

You can boot off of the install cd and use it to install a bootloader.

All you have to do is...

1. Boot using the cd.
2. Setup the networking like you do in the beginning of the install docs
3. Then add your swap partition (swapon /dev/hdxy where xy is your swap partition)
4. Follow the mounting information from the install docs,
Code:

mkdir /mnt/gentoo
mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo
mkdir /mnt/gentoo/boot
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/gentoo/boot
mount -o bind /proc /mnt/gentoo/proc
cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf

5. chroot into your system:
Code:

# chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
# env-update
# source /etc/profile

6. Then start following the install guides directions for installing the bootloader.

Those are pretty much directions directly out of the install docs but with the steps removed that you shouldn't (or don't need) to do.

when you boot from the BootCD you can give a parameter stating the root partition
Code:
<label> root=/dev/hdx?

where label is the label shown in lilo and /dev/hdx? (like /dev/hda1) is your root partition, then you can install lilo (and run it :!: 'lilo -v') then just reboot and voila... :)

This is the normal way of working, haven't used the Gentoo Boot/Live CD though, but AFAIK this is similar to other boot methods.

Hope it helps

Ok tried reinstalling gentoo again after fubar my system last night, and this time around i had more booting problems. The install (stage 3) seemed to go ok, except it took about 5 hours on a athlon xp 2000+ w/ 512 mb ram. Anyways, when i got to the end following the install guide instructions grub would not install, well thats fine with me because i hate grub and went to install Lilo instead, instead of screwing up lilo i decided to reboot to winxp and read the manual on lilo because i had some questions. So i did that, but my real concern now is yesterday after wasting a ton of time installing gentoo i had the forementioned booting problems, well i booted from the live cd using "gentoo root=/dev/<hd kernel etc> and that worked ok, but i went to reboot to winxp and onloading all xp would do is BSOD#%$! so.. I really don't want to have to go through installing both os's again but i want to be able to load gentoo and install Lilo and live happilly ever after.. any suggestions??

Thanks in Advance.

so... use livecd to boot, mount hd's (incl /boot). create lilo.conf with setup for gentoo and winxp and run lilo

that should be all...
