What's supposed to go in this file? For lack of knowlage I just copied the one Kanotix had automaticaly generated:

container
fan
processor
thermal
video
ne2k_pci
usbcore |
But are all of these necesary (I'm refering specificaly to button, container, fan, etc.)? And if so, what do they all do? _________________ Nothing is what it seems to be. |

Depends on your machine and whats necessary for your needs.
You can put in there everything that you've chosen to compile as module in your kernel setup, but its only useful to you if you list those modules that you need directly after booting the system or which you want to be available without loading manually. |

Short simple answer, probably not.
Are these options enabled in menuconfig of your kernel? Code: | [*] Enable loadable module support
[*] Automatic kernel module loading |
