hello all. i just installed gentoo and i finished emerging gnome and xscreensaver. and i do everything else the gnome instalation handbook says to do and i attempt to start startx and the screen goes black and comes back to the loging screen with some errors. one in particular is:

new driver is ATI

using defauly built-in configuration

RADEON: no matching device section for instance (busid pci:2:0:1) found

fatal server error:
cannot run in framebuffer mod. please specify busids for all
devices.. (any help with what that means and how to do it id be greatfull for)

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server
":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

once again any help with that would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS,
Milo

Milo1984,

You need an xorg.conf file. See http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

If you haven't already:

be sure to run these commands as root

First, download the ati-drivers...

Code:
emerge ati-drivers

Then set them as your default...

Code:
eselect opengl set ati

And then create a xorg.conf file

Code:
fglrxconfig

Thanks for all your help. I had a friend who's been running gentoo for four years help me through this one. He almost fell over when I told I couldn't emerge xll. Thanks anyway.
