|
|
Ok i have tried for weeks to get my connection setup and with no luck. I have done some searches but nothing that figures out my problem. I have a adsl pppoe dsl connection through soutwestern bell. I have a 12234@sbcglobal.net for a username and a ******* for a password. I run adsl-setup and set it up for eth1 and let 'server' set my dns info and then save settings. I have the 2 modules autoloaded for my ethernet card, one is R8169 for realtek and the other is forcedeth for my msi k8 neo2 nforce platinum motherboard. i have tried rc-update add net.eth1 and I have also tried rc-update add net.eth0 just in case I have the eth0's incorrect. I will adjust adsl-setup accordingly to check if it is using eth0 accordingly.. My /etc/conf.d/net setting is adsl_user_eth0=" adsl " or adsl_user_eth01= "adsl ", trial and error here.. I am not having any luck. from the error messages I have received I rememeber it saying something about Mac address error or something. Sorry for not the exact error message but its hard to post complete error messages unless you write them down since you cant connnect to the internet. Any ideas here please!!!!!! |

I have SBC DSL too.
If you have used the Windows software that came with your SBC Yahoo DSL starter kit to setup the modem and you can connect from Windows, then you only need to configure your network for dhcp (the default configuration in 2005.1 gentoo install cd) The modem handles the PPPoE logon automagically anytime you try to connect to the internet. The modem also acts as a dhcp server for the connected network card. (assuming that you have the ethernet version of the modem and not usb) If you haven't already done so, you will need to emerge dhcpcd while booted from the install cd and in the chroot environment.
Which DSL modem do you have?
Is it connected via USB or ethernet? |

i never used the sbc dsl cd i have winxp so u can just go to control panel and set up connection manually. As far as my modem is concerned its a speedstream 5360 Adsl ethernet modem. Its a older sbc modem, maybe 3 yrs old. I have had their service forever and the only time i used the sbc dsl cd is when I had windows 2000. |

Code: | $ cat /etc/conf.d/net
# This blank configuration will automatically use DHCP for any net.*
# scripts in /etc/init.d. To create a more complete configuration,
# please review /etc/conf.d/net.example and save your configuration
# in /etc/conf.d/net (this file :]!).

If that doesn't work, your modem may be configured in 'bridge' mode instead of 'PPPoE' mode. If that were the case though, then the adsl_setup should have worked. I think I can walk you through checking the modem mode if we have to. At least, I know how to do it with a SpeedStream 5100B. |

Browse to this address http://192.168.0.1 and look for a line that indicates what mode the modem is using.
The correct address for your modem should be listed on the bottom of it. |

sorry i fell asleep last nite to answer ?.... I get a timeout page not found. I think sbc's new modems have built in routers and mine is old so it is just a plain jane adsl modem. Cant put my finger on it. When i used one of the older universal cd's it always worked as long as i chose in kernel config my 2 ethernet cards. I would just run adsl-setup and away it went... |

Sorry. I found some information on your modem and you are quite right about it not containing an embedded webserver for configuration. It appears to always be in bridge mode, so using adsl-setup is the correct way to go after all. I don't have any experience configuring using adsl-setup as my modem handles the PPPoE connection for me. Further, I only have one network card in my machine. However, I did find a website with a lot of information about your modem here http://www.dslreports.com/faq/eff/6%205360. I hope it provides more help than I was able to. |
