Just want to say thank you all! I am now writing this from my nice new 6.8.99 Xorg. That floam link to the guide for the MX1000 was EXACTLY what I needed and worked perfectly!

didn't anyone get the same compile error as I got (see previous page). Can some of you post emerge -pv xorg-x11? May be a use flag issue.

mine:

looks like it was caused by the insecure-drivers use flag...

It's not completely compiled yet, but I think it's past the point of failure.

Thanks for helping me out!

A 7.0.0_rc1 meta-ebuild for xorg-x11 is in the tree now for those who want to try the modular approach. You'll need to unmask it and its dependencies in both you packages.unmask and your packages.keywords file. If I have time when I get home later, I'll try it out.

which one is newer this one here or the portage one?
BTW the portage one is not working at the moment for me.,

How did you create that list of packages. I trust that you are correct, but I am curious how you descided which of those packages are dependencies. It is possible that this list will expand if different use flags are chosen?

I think he look in:
Code:
vi +801 /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask

I have made a quick-and-dirty-in-middle-of-the-night bash script who run emerge and put blocking package in package.keywords and package.unmask.
You need to supply the first masked package, then he run emerge until no more masked package block.
The script is inspired by "gimme" script from "Originally by Tekmanx, re-written by Hackeron, re-re-written by FreeIX" so they deserve credit ;)

backup your /etc/portage/package.keywords and /etc/portage/package.unmask before running the script.

Code:
#!/bin/bash

emerge="emerge -pvutD world"

source /sbin/functions.sh
[[ $EUID != 0 ]] && ewarn "You are not root!"
[ -z "$1" ] && eerror "Please specify a package name (eg. $0 <package-name>)" && exit 1
[ -d /etc/portage ] || mkdir /etc/portage

addToFile() {
        argv=$*
        for i in $argv
        do
                echo "$i ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
                echo "$i" >> /etc/portage/package.unmask
        done
}

addToFileLoop() {
        echo "$1 ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
        echo "$1" >> /etc/portage/package.unmask
        checkIfNext
}

checkIfNext() {
        emergeOutput=`$emerge | grep "All ebuilds that could satisfy"`

        [ -z "$emergeOutput" ] && eerror "Race end" && $emerge && exit 1

        NEXT=`echo $emergeOutput | sed 's/\"\ have\ been\ masked\.//' | sed 's/\[[[:digit:]].*\]//' | sed 's/-[[:digit:]].*$//' | sed 's/\!\!\!\ All\ ebuilds\ that\ could\ satisfy\ \"//' | sed 's/>=//'`

        einfo "I unmask: $NEXT"
        addToFileLoop $NEXT
}

addToFile $*
checkIfNext

ok I saw this post late... this morning I notes that portage had a xorg-x11-7.0.0_rc1.ebuild

which one is newer this one here or the portage one?
BTW the portage one is not working at the moment for me.,

My ebuild has some more fixes over the -rc1 in portage since it's based on CVS. The only difference betwen 7.0-rc1 and 6.9-rc1 is the build system so feature wise they are the same.

How did you create that list of packages. I trust that you are correct, but I am curious how you descided which of those packages are dependencies. It is possible that this list will expand if different use flags are chosen?

As said, I looked in the package.mask file in the profile dir.

This is the complete list you'll need. With different use flags it'll be likely there are LESS packages that need to be unmasked.

Unmasking the list above completely won't hurt though, the packages you unnecceserely unmasked just won't be installed.

I've had emerged this xorg version with the newest ati-drivers. But xorg.log show errors:
Code:
(EE) fglrx(0): === [R200DALSetControllerConfigForRemap] === CWDDC ControllerSetConfig failed: 6 - 0 << I don't understand it at all...
Cannot find any valid mode
(EE) fglrx(0): PreInitModes failed
(EE) fglrx(0): R200PreInit failed
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. << with radeon driver it's work fine so it's a really problem...

Can somebody help me??

I guess the release will be in late december and then it'll have to be in portage unstable for 3-4 months. So it'll probably take a while.

I don't have a ati card so I have no idea. What's your xorg.conf?

Just compiled it and everything works fine except the nvidia driver. It fails with following errors (from Xorg.0.log):

Remenber one thing, actually proprietary drivers, doesn't support oficially Xorg 6.9. So probalby when Xorg 6.9 get's out new drivers come, and they will be compatible.

I think that nvidia, probably work, although fglrx won't work. I don't know i don't use them....

I'm using the r300, for the use that i give to my pc, it's working great.

by the way excelent ebuild...

Thanks for the ebuild! I was hoping Xorg 6.9/7.0 would solve my problem w/ DRI & two cards, but it seems like it's not going to be that easy... and now a new problem just cropped up! First, a little background. I have two cards in my computer, an AGP ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon (R100) and a PCI Radeon 7000/VE (RV100). Sometime around 6.8.1, my computer would hard lock if I started X on both card w/ the DRI module loaded. I can start w/ DRI with X on just one card (either works) and I can start X w/ both cards but DRI commented out. The latter is what I've been doing primarily. So, I upgraded w/ this ebuild, hoping it would fix things. Unfortunately it didn't seem to help. First I tried each card individually w/ DRI, which worked, but both got the same old result. I ssh'ed in from another computer and tailed /var/log/everything/current until the hard lock, and this first line looks like it might be relevant:
Code:
Nov  5 23:45:06 [kernel] mtrr: 0xd0000000,0x8000000 overlaps existing 0xd0000000,0x2000000
                - Last output repeated 2 times -
Nov  5 23:45:06 [kernel] agpgart: Found an AGP 2.0 compliant device at 0000:00:00.0.
Nov  5 23:45:06 [kernel] agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at 0000:00:00.0 into 1x
mode
Nov  5 23:45:06 [kernel] agpgart: Putting AGP V2 device at 0000:01:00.0 into 1x
mode

Unfortunately, after I rebooted my computer, I couldn't use the second card anymore! Either in dual-head mode or single with or without DRI. (The card is still functional, I rebooted into windows just to make sure.) It's not a hard lock up, but I can't get the console back. When I ssh into the machine and tail /var/log/Xorg.0.log, the following line keeps repeating at the end:
Code:
(EE) RADEON(0): Idle timed out, resetting engine...

If anyone can help me out with the first problem, that'd be great! But i'd definitely settle for the second. :)
The relevant files:
xorg.conf: http://s88382932.onlinehome.us/files/xorg.conf (I'm currently using it in the Single layout, and yes, I have tried uncommenting all of the options in the Device sections 8) )
Xorg log after rebooting from the hard lock: http://s88382932.onlinehome.us/files/Xorg.0.log
Xorg log w/ PCI card times out (Single2 layout): http://s88382932.onlinehome.us/files/Xorg.0.log-timeout

Thanks for your help! (At least I can watch TV now! :wink:)
