Ya so i was just going through the installation process via the installation docs and i get to your kernel plan..
I run the kernel thing and decide to install the generic kernel because its easiest and i dont wanna mess stuff up.
So i go:
Code: | genkernel --udev all |
The computer says a few things.. .
Code: | --udev is deprecated and no longer necessary as udev is on by default
Gentoo Linux Genkernel: Version 3.3.6
Running with options: --udev all
Linux Khernel 2.6.13-gentoo-r5 for x86...
kernel: >> Running mrproper...
config: Using config from /usr/share/genkernel/x86/kernel-config-2.6
previous config backed up to .config.bak
>> Running oldconfig....
kernel: >> Cleaning...
kernel: >> Making dependencies...
>> Compiling 2.6.13-gentoo-r5 bzImage...
|
And then it crapped out.. its been sitting there for a good hour or so... i have a celeron 2ghz processor... anyone know whats wrong?
I got some erorr saying "19 of your config files are out of date, run emerge --help config to learn how to fix that" and i did , and followed the steps and nothing worked.... Maybe i need to update my config files? if so, how do i do that? if not, what is going on @.@
edit: maybe it is the fact that i am not installing a gui, so i did not install support for gnome, gtk, X, and a few other things... and the genkernel doesnt work without those things??? |

genkernel does not rely on any GUI. It seems like you just have a ton of modules you are building, which could explain the amount of time it is taking to compile the kernel (though two hours seems kinda high...which generation Celeron is it?).
To update config files, run etc-update. _________________ Knowledge is power.

Today, I got adventerous and decided to make use of all the spare parts I had laying around. 30 minutes later and a few peices of duct tape, I'm now the proud owner of a frankenstien era computer. For refrence, I harvested the mobo from a "dead" HP comp, the proccessor is a 1.1 Ghz Celeron with 128k L2 Cache. I've got 256 MB ram installed in it right now.
I downloaded the minimal install iso file and burned it on my windows computer and popped it into the new box and it worked fine. The only snag happened when I got to the part about configuring the kernel. Being inexperienced I chose to use genkernel.
I swear, I thought the computer froze after using that command. I had time to watch a movie (It was probably done before the movie was, but halfway through Dogma, it was still doing its thing.) Unfortunatly, my work was lost due a timely powerout. <grumbles>
Anyway, I followed the instructions to the letter and it worked quite well. With my limited experice, the only thing I could guess would be missing a line while reading install docs. Which I did one.... or seven times. _________________ Of all sad words of tongue and pen, the saddest are these; it might have been |

Genkernel takes a long time. It's compiling pretty much everything. And that's a lot. With only 128MB of RAM, it'll take quite some time. (not to mention how crap the Celeron is, ps. it doesn't have 128MB L2 cache. I'm assuming that's your RAM, unless you meant kb) |
