|

As we all know, Google Earth is, if nothing else, very entertaining to use and I've very much been wanting to use it without having to reboot into Windows XP. Has anyone tried to do this? I've attempted the install it with both wine and cedega with no success. Thanks for anyone who might be able to shed some light on whether or not this is possible. _________________ "Ford," he said, "you're turning into a penguin. Stop it." |

Can't help you with google earth, but apparently there's an effort underfoot to make NASA's World Wind (a similar program) cross-platform:

I, too, would love to see Google Earth ported to Linux (and Portage, of course!). Is there any news?
Thanks,

I think Google Earth depends heavily on DirectX so porting it to Linux could be a little more trouble. On the other hand, NASA's World Wind seems to be a winner to me... |

I have no source but I read somewhere a rumour that they were releasing a Linux port in early 2006. Could just be a rumor though, |

google earth is pretty tightly integrated with IE for all those .kml links opening inside of the app itself.
so they'll have to somehow figure out how to separate that.. that seems to be one of the bigger roadblocks |

InstallShield Wizard pops up, the progress bar goes from 0 to 100% and then a Windows messagebox pops up:
Quote: | Google Earth - InstallShield Wizard
ERROR: Could not load [c:\windows\system\psapi.dll] |
And once I click the OK button, another Windows messagebox pops up:
Quote: | Google Earth - InstallShield Wizard
This operating system is not supported by Google Earth. The installer will now close. |
These are the console messages when Wine exits:
Quote: | err:ole:dispatch_rpc no apartment found for ipid {ffffffff-ffff-ffff-0d00-00000a000000}
err:rpc:I_RpcReceive we got fault packet with status 6be

Does GoogleEarth only work with Wine 0.9? |

Thanks for the information about world wind. I'll look into it.
Until then, just because I do get bored sometimes, I've been trying to install Google Earth under wine-0.9. My install crashes at the same as Progman3K's, so I'll probably just keep messing around in wine, replacing dll's and changing windows versions.
Progman, keep me posted if you manage to get things working. I can't meddle to much in my wine, because I've got Diablo II running near perfectly with alsa, so I don't want to destroy my hard work just to get Google Earth running and have D2 crash on me. _________________ "Ford," he said, "you're turning into a penguin. I was able to get the GoogleEarth setup to advance a little further by running
and specifying that the GoogleEarth setup needed to run as a winxp application.
It still gives the first error, about psapi.dll not being found, but then the setup goes on and lets me pick the destination I want to install to.
Once I click the final NEXT to start copying the app files into the installation directory, the progress bar starts at 0% and goes to about 2% before stalling.
The copying never completes.
I installed World Wind2 instead, and that works perfectly. |

[update]
There is a wonderfull howto at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_GoogleEarth_with_wine
and it really works
Since the menus do not work, does anybody know if there are keyboard-shortcuts for them? |

It is rumoured that a linux version will be released very soon...
The wikipedia page says:
Quote: |
Google Earth ... and is currently available for use on personal computers running Microsoft Windows. Linux and Mac OS versions have been announced for the end of 2005.
|
And the end of 2005, that is now... So I guess pretty soon a linux native version will be available. _________________ only when it is dark enough, can you see the stars |

I managed it to install and run according to the tips on gentoo-wiki.com. But now when it starts it complains about not being able to connect to the server (kh.google.com). It can't be a firewall problem as the Google support says because it works fine in Windows XP. _________________ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_(microprocessor) |

I've always been suprised that google doesn't simultaniously release their apps for linux, since they are a very pro-linux company. |

I have tested both 0.9.2 and 0.9.3.
0.9.3 won't make the G.E. work at all, no matter what WINEDLLOVERRIDES was given.
0.9.2 works but there is a problem of the panels as already known.
Hope Google will release genuine Linux version of this and we enjoy it! |

Google uses Linux internally very extensively if I'm not mistaken. Now if that is true why don't they extrenally support it? As a large entity, it would be nice if Google not only took from but gave to the community. That's just my opinion. I know they aren't obligated to do so if they don't release their changes for public use, but if they are taking advantage of the community it would be nice if we got something out of them. |

Didn't google give back to the community with their "Summer of Code" program? I was under the impression that they gave grants to a lot of open-source programmers. |

I think google gives back also, as most of their tools are webbased, and usable under Linux. I jsut think it would be great to see a company liek Google, who seems very anti-microsoft to release things for Linux simultaniously with Windows releases. I think it would send a nice message to the public and more important to the financial markets. |

True, I forgot about that. Made an ass out of myself.

That was mainly what I was talking about. They release Google Earth and Picaso and Hello for Windows, nothing for us Linux users. Yes, we could go through the Wine install and configuration, but I personally would rather not go through that. |
