Google Earth on linux?

As we all know, Google Earth is, if nothing else, very entertaining to use and I've very much been wanting to use it without having to reboot into Windows XP. Has anyone tried to do this? I've attempted the install it with both wine and cedega with no success. Thanks for anyone who might be able to shed some light on whether or not this is possible.

Can't help you with google earth, but apparently there's an effort underfoot to make NASA's World Wind (a similar program) cross-platform:

I, too, would love to see Google Earth ported to Linux (and Portage, of course!). Is there any news?

I think Google Earth depends heavily on DirectX so porting it to Linux could be a little more trouble. On the other hand, NASA's World Wind seems to be a winner to me...

I have no source but I read somewhere a rumour that they were releasing a Linux port in early 2006. Could just be a rumor though,

InstallShield Wizard pops up, the progress bar goes from 0 to 100% and then a Windows messagebox pops up:

Thanks for the information about world wind. I'll look into it.

Until then, just because I do get bored sometimes, I've been trying to install Google Earth under wine-0.9. My install crashes at the same as Progman3K's, so I'll probably just keep messing around in wine, replacing dll's and changing windows versions.

Progman, keep me posted if you manage to get things working. I can't meddle to much in my wine, because I've got Diablo II running near perfectly with alsa, so I don't want to destroy my hard work just to get Google Earth running and have D2 crash on me.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get google earth onto Gentoo? I trie4d wine, but that didn't work very well.

I managed it to install and run according to the tips on gentoo-wiki.com. But now when it starts it complains about not being able to connect to the server (kh.google.com). It can't be a firewall problem as the Google support says because it works fine in Windows XP.

I've always been suprised that google doesn't simultaniously release their apps for linux, since they are a very pro-linux company.

I have tested both 0.9.2 and 0.9.3.
0.9.3 won't make the G.E. work at all, no matter what WINEDLLOVERRIDES was given.
0.9.2 works but there is a problem of the panels as already known.
Hope Google will release genuine Linux version of this and we enjoy it!

Google uses Linux internally very extensively if I'm not mistaken. Now if that is true why don't they extrenally support it? As a large entity, it would be nice if Google not only took from but gave to the community. That's just my opinion. I know they aren't obligated to do so if they don't release their changes for public use, but if they are taking advantage of the community it would be nice if we got something out of them.

Didn't google give back to the community with their "Summer of Code" program? I was under the impression that they gave grants to a lot of open-source programmers.

I think google gives back also, as most of their tools are webbased, and usable under Linux. I jsut think it would be great to see a company liek Google, who seems very anti-microsoft to release things for Linux simultaniously with Windows releases. I think it would send a nice message to the public and more important to the financial markets.
