Hi.
Does GRUB support non standard resolutions like 16/10 screens (e.g. 1680x1050 or 1280x800)? _________________ Gentoo addict: tomorrow I quit, I promise!... Just one more emerge...

Mine does. My laptop resolution is 1680x1050, and my grub.conf file looks much like the setup given in the Gentoo Handbook. The default Gentoo background displays nicely, but does look a bit stretched. |

Looks to me like screen stretching (or expansion) is enabled on your machine... Is it?
EDIT: Geez! my 1000th post, already; cheers _________________ Gentoo addict: tomorrow I quit, I promise!... Just one more emerge...

Thanks. Is there any documentation on gfxboot? I've googled the Internet during one hour and found only download links or directory indexes... Also what is gfxboot exactly?
Isn't that too much to just change GRUB's support for non-standard resolutions? I presume it uses a standard way to put the screen into graphics mode. Since there are not many of them (there is VESA, which I know of) it should be possible to look into the code and see what to change, isn't it? Unless gfxboot does that?...
EDIT: I've taken a look at Grub code for switching to graphics mode... That's pure assembly code. Though it reminds me the good ol' times I wrote assembly code for switching my old Hercules video card to graphics mode, I recon this is a little bit more complex than expected. But I recon, to a developer, nothing is impossible . _________________ Gentoo addict: tomorrow I quit, I promise!... Just one more emerge...

gfxboot simply adds vesa support to grub as well as a whole language to design the graphical menu. However, I also found few info / skins on it and right now since several years there were several patches which were able to add vesa support to grub and it was mentioned on their mailing list a view times, but right now nothing like this ever made it into vanilla grub. gfxboot seems to be the most capapable as of yet, but I believe that it is very hard to write themes for it - which may be the reason why there are so few themes available. Well grub2 is under development ( maybe ) and we will see in a distant future if it will have vesa support - you may want to take a look into their mailing list... |

Fine. Thanks for the hint. I'll try to stay tuned with Grub2. _________________ Gentoo addict: tomorrow I quit, I promise!... Just one more emerge...
