I heard that some distributor produced openoffice 2.0 for ppc linux.
But still there is no binary package of openoffice 2.0 for ppc in portage.
Actually, I built 1.1.5 version, although it took so long time to build (1 days and 3 hours!).
However, for 2.0 version, it is impossible for me to build it, because my ibook has a small disk capacity.

Unfortunately until there's an official OO.o-2 build at: http://porting.openoffice.org/linuxppc/ppclinks.html, there won't be an openoffice-bin build. Pylon built an OpenOffice 2.0.0 binpkg with all USE flags enabled, optimised for G4 and LINGUAS="en de", it's available here: http://tinyurl.com/d5s3w. If anyone would like to contribute a G3 build, please post it here. ;)

I didn't think it would work on your G3, I clearly stated it was a G4 optimised build. :p Sorry.

I compiled OOo2 on my G4 Powerbook 1 GHz: It took about 18 hours... ;-) But it works fine!

I am trying to install this on iBook G4. But when I run fixpackages I get

Code:

Invalid binary package: openoffice-2.0.0.tbz2

What does this mean ? Should I go ahead and install it ?

can we expect an official ppc release anytime (soon)? as i can see the latest official release is 1.1.2 while 1.1.5 was the actual latest release of the 1.x branch. i would really appreciate an update as i dont like to compile the whole thing by myself..

Probably not, they seem to have stopped providing 1.x builds after 1.1.2.

Did you build it with the java use-flag? Cause I managed to get it working too on my Powerbook 1.3 GHz but I had to disable java and so I got less features

This are my use-flags:

Code:
[ebuild   R   ] app-office/openoffice-2.0.0  +curl +eds +gnome +gtk +java -kde -ldap -mozilla -nas +xml2 +zlib

Java is enabled. This is the java version I am using (I had also some troubles with Java en OOo a time ago, but now it works fine):

Code:
[ibm-jdk-bin-1.4.2] "IBM JDK 1.4.2" (/etc/env.d/java/20ibm-jdk-bin-1.4.2) *

I got the same JDK as you, what version of dev-java/ant-core do you have cause I had some troubles with this package: I couldn't install the ppc-stable package (emerge failed) and had to install the unstable one (1.6.5-r2) and I think it might be the problem. When emerging openoffice i had messages from ant that looked like 'sun malformed io exception' something like that.

I have ant-core-1.6.5-r2 installed, just as you have...

The malformed io expression is due to using a UTF8 environment. See this bug for more info: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=93649

I was able to install this. But when I try to start openoffice I get

Code:

no suitable windowing system found, exiting.

I have startup-notification installed but I dont have either gnome or kde. I use fvwm. The above build uses kde. Does this mean that I cannot use it without having kde installed ?

Hmm... It took about 8hrs on my Powerbook 6,8 (G4 1.5GHz with 512MB RAM). I'm using gcc 4.0.2. 8hrs is bad enough, but at least you can start the build in the evening and use OO when you get up.

What should I look for to find the problem ? Is there any other information I can provide which can help to find out the trouble I am having ?

I couldn't get OO-2.0 to work; same problem of no windowing system found. But I am able to use the 1.1.4 version provided by silian87 and it works. Thanks silian87.

There is a small display problem. When I am in any drop-down menu item like File etc., the item that is highlighted by the mouse is covered by dark-blue color and I cannot read the text below it. Is there a way to fix this ?

I fixed my problem by making a change in the settings. In Options->OpenOffice->View, I changed the text anti-aliasing from 8 to 14. This fixed the display problem I described before.

Openoffice needs either the kde or gnome libraries to run. As long as you install either of those, and your display manager can handle it, openoffice will run. I don't know what the minimal set of libraries is.
