you need to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file

I was having the same problem when I installed kernel 2.6.13. I had to install the testing nvidia drivers, rebooted and everything worked just fine.

Hi darrel,

MANY THANKS FOR THE TIP! :-D

I also had a problem with this, but mine was even stranger:
I had an nVidia GeForce2 MX440 (WinFast) in my Gentoo box and it was running perfectly. But then I upgraded to an nVidia GeForce 6200 (generic) it stopped working. The error message was the same ("SCREEN found, but none have a usable configuration").

I had nvidia-glx-1.0.6629-r6 and nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r4.
Then, I simply typed
Code:
export ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"

in order to accept the testing 'emerges'.
Afterwards, by simply typing
Code:

emerge nvidia-glx
etc-update                # (to update the /etc/modules.d/nvidia config file)
modprobe -r nvidia    # (in order to remove the old driver from memory)
modprobe nvidia        # (loading the new driver)
opengl-update nvidia  # (just in case...)
startx

...everything works now!
The new emerge added "eselect-1.0_rc1" and "eselect-opengl-1.0.3", and upgraded to nvidia-kernel and glx 1.0.776-r1.

Thanks for the help!
Regards,
