What x64 package would I use to compile and run Gentoo on my system? I am not sure which package I would use, or where to get it.
Also, what's the latest version of Gentoo?
Sorry for all the noob questions, but I have been learning from Fedora Core and Red Hat. I want to try and compile a custom system now. |

So the AMD64 version will work fine with my Pentium D?
Thanks
Edit: Also, what did you mean by "stage 3?" |

I'd expect it to. It's got the same EM64T extensions as my Xeons but differs in having dual core rather than my hyperthreading.
Stage 3 is the type of Gentoo install. There are plenty of threads and docs on which is best. If you want to start with Gentoo for the first time I'd say Stage 3 is good. A Stage 1 involves getting the machine above booting level and then scratch building the whole lot. I'm sure this will produce a highly 'made to measure' machine if done well.
Some feel (and you can read the forum on this) that a Stage 3, then running just a few commands and letting the machine build for a day or so, can produce the same outcome.
I found I had enough on my plate with Stage 3 for my first few installs. There's plenty of stuff here, on the docs site and on the wiki. Get them in your Gentoo favourites now. |
