mplayer causes X to lock up

mplayer causes X to lock up
playing VOB files or a dvd screen freeze and the sound goes into a loop
Ive tried the mplayer ebuild latest and mplayer-cvs. I have deleted the config files, adjusting between alsa and oss
When i try mplayer -nosound blahblah.VOB works fine no sound of course.
xine and vlc plays the same VOB and dvd just fine not mplayer gets in a couple of seconds and then freezes
some of the errors I'm getting in the console are "a52 crc check failed and error at resampling.
Iv'e recompiled a52dec, transcode,win32codecs and several other possible causes but still the same
my sound card is ens_1371 amd 2100+ gcc 3.4.4 2.6.14-nitro2, I just upgraded to this kernel from 2.6.14-rc2 to see if it made a difference but no go. Some times it will play longer between start and crash, here is emerge info

I'm open to sugestions I believe its somewhere in the mplayer program itself but I'm out of ideas Thanks in advance Albyjr
