Ho appena finito di mettere su una gentoo (partendo da stage1 - livecd 2005.1) sul mio notebook (in firma).
ho dato il reboot, da grub ho selezionato GentooLinux e... sorpresa...
mi vengono visualizzati tutti i caratteri completamente distorti, a malapena si riesce a leggere qualche cosa! Nel kernel avevo impostato il supporto per il framebuffer (con modulo nvidiafb), ma in grub non avevo immesso nessun parametro video. Allora ho rimesso il livecd, chrootato e riconfigurato grub cosi:

Hai provato a usare:
il framebuffer nvidia ha dato qualche problema.

provato ma niente! 
però strano... appena inizia a caricare, per meno di un secondo le scritte sembrano corrette... poi si alterano.. e sembra vengono ripetute (tipo alla fine esce scritto: LogLogin invece di Login).
ufff... con il livecd si vede tutto perfettamente...
ps: tra l'altro ogni volta che provo ad avviare devo poi spegnere manualmente, perchè il comando reboot fa bloccare la macchina (ma non riesco a vedere bene perchè, visto che non si leggono bene i caratteri). Ma questo credo sia un altro problema non collegato...... credo...

ricompila il kernel avendo cura di selezionare il driver suggerito da gutter
e rimuovendo completamente il supporto agli altri drivers per il framebuffer,
unitamente a questo ti suggerisco di rimergere le splashutils e di aggiungere
a grub.conf una configurazione + adeguata per vesa-tng (cerca sul forum o sul wiki gentoo splashutils)
tieni duro è solo un problema di configurazione

come da tuo suggerimento, caro X-Drum, ho ricompilato con calma il kernel eliminando tutti gli altri moduli del framebuffer, ho attivato solo vesafb-tng (attenzione gutter: avevi sbagliato a scrivere  ). Riconfigurato il grub.conf seguendo questo wiki:

tutto ok... funzionamento perfetto! adesso sotto con le splashutils!!
