Hello,

Trying to find the right gps navigator software for a carputer in the process of being built around Gentoo...

Not satisfied with GPSDrive - no point to point direction - or with other open source software (sigh!), just found this product that comes without source and declared to be available for Linux running QT 3.3 or higher. This is a commercial software.
I'm based in Europe.

Anybody has experience with it?

More info on http://www.mapfactor.cz/products/navigator/detail.html

Any help needed, thanks.

Regards

G_M

got it yesterday and installed it for a first test under winXP.
functionality under win is ok, routing & navigation on a ~40km journey works fine but the talking pet ;-) needs a bit finetuning.

at the very moment i try to install it on my gentoo-notebook but have problems with the dependencies.

got it running now :-)
didnt want to clutter my clean installation with much too "foreign" stuff so i did it manually.

what u need:
1.) emerge packages if not there already
emerge nas (network audio support) & unrar & qt
start & enable nas (or start it only before running navigator)

2) install the provided rpms from dvd with --nodeps:
xerces-c (newer version in portage but will not work, provided version not in portage)
libicu (didnt try to use portage version)
icu (--""--)
icu-locales (--""--)

maybe the icu-stuff from portage works too, i will try that when i install it on the carpc.
fonts in gnome are a bit big, will try to adjust that (maybe qt/kde settings).

about navigator:
this is a huge improvement comparing it to my previous windows-app (Map&Guide travelbook version 3).
after opening the application one is overwhelmed with the amount of options, menus, buttons windows :-)
fortunatly searching a destination and starting navigation is found quickly.

i've made 2 test-trips so far.

trip 1 directed me home from a customers site 40km away from linz.
the shortest path would have led me through the city but i drove in another direction instead .
navigator will not (as travelbook did) ask one to turn around (pretty dangerous on country-side streets) but instead suggests to turn into another path that will somehow bring one back to the right track in the right direction.
after some (ignored) suggestions navigator gave up and rerouted me around the city, maybe the route was shorter at this point.
the voice-guide is a bit misleading sometimes as it suggests to drive straightaway while meaning to follow the main road, but a quick look on the screen will tell one where to go, as it shows a splitted view of the map and the next intersection-situation in a very plain manner.
at this point i followed the route and got home successfully :D.

2nd trip was a short trip in the city & back with the linux version and was ok too.

overall:
the maps for austria are ok and up-to-date so far, navigator contains even very new roundabouts.
rerouting is very fast.
the voice-guide is ok (not too much talking as travelbook does) but will need finetuning, i hope one can adjust the trigger-distances (not found yet).
one can do much additional stuff with it, like measuring distances or areas !?!, one can save adresses (an add-on to travelbook i never had) and a lot of other stuff.
i'm happy with it, especially considering the pricetag and the flawless linux compatibility ;-)

test environment(s):
1) jvc xp3210 (cel-m 600), winxp home
2) acer 803 (pentium-m 1.3), gentoo
- noname usb gps mouse, sirf chipset
- citroen c5 ;-)

try to upgrade to mapFactor's 4.4 version, it is free for users of prev. versions.
there is an optional tarball of installation files along with the rpm which should be more usable for gentooists.

the DEMO is downoadable from:
