Hi there,
I got Gentoo installed on my laptop, Aspire 1300, and I'm generally very happy with it. However, about five minutes after I've booted the machine my hard drive just starts going crazy, working with something and just spinning - reminds me of a similarly annoying feature of XP . Does anyone know what my computer might be doing and have I might disable that - unless of course it's crucial for the performance ?
Thanks a bunch . |

It's probably running updatedb (start top when it happens to make sure). This is needed to keep the locate database up to date. If you never use locate you could disable it by deleting /etc/cron.daily/slocate |

Thanks . I'll try to run top next time and then disable slocate, if that's what's going on.
Cheers! |
