One I can use with aMsn that can play most all types of files, and not bring up a window when it plays a sound.

Any ideas? aplay doesn't seem to work.

Oh, and I use alsa, don't wanna change.

"play" from the sox package is a leightweight player that can play at least mp3, ogg and wav files.

you might be interested in mpd, the music player daemon

it alone only is a server application, but you can use one of the clients such as ncmpc with an ncurses interface.
there also is a client which you can use from the shell instantly

there are php- and gui (gtk/qt) based clients aswell.

ps: oops, didnt see the aMsn thing, im not sure if those would work together, sorry

i have used Orpheus and Alsa to play mp3's, working fine and have simple playlist also.

Don't forget the infamous mpg321, it only plays mp3 buts that's pretty much all I have. 8)

cmus is one of the most consistently underrated CLI music players out there. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a command line sound player.
