|

I've never used laptop with linux, so can someone give me advice about buying a laptop of about 1000$ ?
that laptop would be used for everyday office work and some multimedia (mp3, divx, dvd...). no 3d/games performance needed.
are there some specific laptops that should be used with (gentoo) linux or I just have to look for the best performance/cash value?
are there some peaces of (laptop) hardware I should avoid because they are not well supported in linux?

I've used Gentoo, Debian, and Fedora on my Thinkpad X40, and all has worked nicely, except the SD-card slot and the active protection system (note... there is a new driver for the active protection system in the kernel; I had to return my X40 before that driver came out).
All in all, I'd reccomend a Thinkpad for any Linux use.

Yes, I think IBM Thinkpad is the easiest one to configure under linux. I also tried Fedora Core, Debian (include Ubuntu), Gentoo on my x31. It works nice. |
