hello,
is there a way to change users in X whithout closing the current session? so you can easily swap between users and not always have to restart every running program?

what exactly do you want?
run a prog as different user in current users X?
Code: | su <other username>
<prog> |
or start a 2nd session as different user?
Code: | alt+f2 --> login
startx -- :1 |

i'm sorry, i wasn't very clear in my question. what i want to do is to start a second (and maybe even a third) session. but i want this to be very, very simple. it's meant for my roommates who are windows-addicts. so whenever the're near a console they'll freak out. i need a solution that allows them with a click , or a simple key combination to start a new session, to easily switch between those sessions and to easily close it.
so the alt+f2 option is not what i'm looking for.

you talking abt something akin to XP fast user switching?
IF you use GNOME there is an option to login as a new user (keeping the other login running) _________________

Yup it is a GDM option so you should be ok.
I am at work atm so am not of any specific help. I am sure someone here knows what I am talking abt otherwise when I get home.
There are two options
1) spawn nested login. It spawns a windows on yr desktop of a new GDM login so you can then login as a new user, but hat isnt what you want
2) takes you to a GDM screen and forces a login. When you then logout it takes you back to the GDM screen, a new button is there to return to the original user.
again as I say been a while since used this option so it is a bit vague _________________
