ugly fonts

I just updated to XFree86 4.3.0. I must say, my fonts got suddenly ugly. Things used to look pretty good, why would it have made them uglier? I hadn't done any special configuring on my old version.

As a side question, anyone know how to turn on those cool transparent pointers? I am using GNOME 2.2 if it matters.
