Animated boot screens for LILO

I have been looking around for a few hours now and found this to be a dead end. There must be a good reason for this, so I want to know what reason is that.

I came across this page: http://www.gamers.org/~quinet/lilo/, it talks about a way to use animated graphical LILO message screens - but only with a SUSE patched LILO. Why wasn't that incorporated in the official LILO versions? Or the Gentoo versions, for that matter? And is there another way to do just that (animated, interactive bootloader screens) with, say, Grub? If so, I can see why this patch died out.
