Hi there everybody!
I have a quite general (and quite complex question) : is it possible to share a port (in fact, an usb-port) over the local network? Means, the windows-machine has full access to the device which is attached to the usb port. I know its (if it works at all) quite insecure, but... well, ill outline the background:
I have a sony md-player, and, as some of you might know, thats the most unix-incompatible thing which exists as sony uses a special encryption to access the player. For now i use the windows-machine of my brother to write to it and send the files via network to his pc. But i dont like this solution. So it came to my mind to somehow control the program which writes to the player (sonicstage) from my linuxbox over network to let it write the files in the network-share over network, through the usb-port to the md-player *gasp*. I know, im quite lazy...
I think i could write a program which controls sonicstage, but before i start pondering i want to know whether is it possible. I know, there exist solutions like vmware, etc, but i never want any ms-crap again and i dont have the money to buy vmware anyway. Sonicstage doesnt run in wine (i think the driversupport of wine isnt that good atm anyway).
Do you have any hints for me?
Regards

Short answer: only if a Windows-side driver exists for this, since something has to do the LAN <-> fake USB translation on the Windows side.
Probably not, in other words. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /
