Why fam's script depends on portmap
Can this dependency be safely removed, or at least modified from need to use dependency
I have no need for portmap and wish to remove it. _________________ There's someone in my head but it's not me - Pink Floyd |

From the FAM faq on http://oss.sgi.com/projects/fam/faq.html .
Quote: | What else will I need?
Portmapper. FAM uses RPC, so your system will need a portmapper. |
So I'll guess you need it, cya lX _________________ "Remember there's a big difference between kneeling down and bending over.", Frank Zappa |

Even tough I want it used on local machine only, not accepting connections from network
Seems an overkill _________________ There's someone in my head but it's not me - Pink Floyd |

You can tell both portmap and famd to only listen to local clients (on the loopback interface 127.0.0.1).
* For famd you have this option: "-L Only accept connections from local clients."
man famd.
Refer to /etc/fam.conf to set this option.
* For portmap you have this option : -l (minus L) that tells portmap to only listen on the loopback interface.
This option is not written in the man page but if you type: portmap --help it will be shown.
Then you can set it in the /etc/init.d/portmap script if there is no configuration file for portmap.
And finally use a firewall to protect you from illegal access to network ports.
Have a nice day. |
